Please implement in-game joystick curves - quality of life.

What it says on the tin. A great quality of life update for stick users would be the implementation of optional, adjustable, joystick curves in the bindings menu.

Generally if joystick users want these already they'll either use some implementation by their joystick manufacturer or a third party software such as Joystick Gremlin. These can be unstable and crash sometimes which is not a great experience mid-flight.

In game, optional, adjustable joystick curves would be lovely. They could also make learning flight assist off more accessible for people that find their stick too twitchy to develop the same level of precision that they may enjoy with other control inputs (though not everyone flying flight assist off would necessarily want to use curves, it's a personal taste thing).

Control input flexibility in Elite is one of the things that makes it great. If all you have is a keyboard and mouse and you don't want to spend extra - great. If you prefer the feel of a gamepad or have accessibility factors that mean that's the control input for you - also great. If you love the immersion of a HOTAS or some similar stick set up - also great. Each has their own mechanical advantages and disadvantages over one another.

Joysticks are great for being able to toggle between FAOn and Off fluidly, mid flight and also work really well for VR users that like being able to look down and see their hands doing in game what they're doing in real life. The addition of in game curves would be a great way to get people using stick/HOTAS some improved quality of life, control over how they play and stability without having to hunt through third party solutions.

If big changes are coming with Odyssey that may be a great opportunity to implement some new functions, so it seems like a good idea to get the idea discussed openly and distinctly well in advance.

This is a great suggestion, and as a HOTAS user, it would be very appreciated.

One of the most useful implementations of in-game curves that I've personally experienced comes from Rise of Flight, a WWI flight sim. It allows curves to be set for "all planes" while also allowing them to be customized for individual planes (the customization overrides the global setting). Here is a screenshot:

Each axis can store its own custom curve, the curve can be defaulted to linear or s-curve (exponential), and points along the curve can be selected and set to customize it greatly. For visual feedback, the device input is shown as well as the resulting effect of the curve when applied to the input. It just worked quite well in letting players personalize the way their plane reacted to input. The curves could also be imported/exported for backing up and iteration. Just a nice system overall, and very welcome.

When I first started playing, I used a full hotas Thrustmaster 16000 setup. Thrustmaster comes with very powerful and highly configurable software called T.A.R.G.E.T. It also comes in TWO entirely different forms. One that is mostly graphics based with a lot of nice things to click (TARGET GUI), and another (TARGET SCRIPT) which requires major study in order to implement if one is not already an experienced coder. To make matters worse, you cannot use both versions at the same time.

There are encyclopaedic threads here in the UK forums about Thrustmaster's native software, TARGET.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/aussiedroids-enhanced-thrustmaster-warthog-script.293027/

I pulled out my hair, got new glasses and gained weight trying to learn TARGET.

Most hotas users use Thrustmaster devices because of affordability.

So yeah, FDEV. The world is bonkers enough. Please help joystick users retain what little sanity they have. An ingame joystick curves type utility would be wonderful.

Thank you and keep safe.

Addendum to previous post. If one is to try to use pip macros using Thrustmaster's native software, TARGET, one must use the TARGET SCRIPT app. The more user friendly, TARGET GUI app, is rendered useless. But of course, the incompatibility was something I had to research. :)

Even if a full curve editor was too difficult to implement, an "sensitivity" slider (which would allow users to, for example, make the stick more or less sensitive around center) could be added to each axis, much like the current deadzone slider or the various options for mouse settings.

I'd love this. But given that the devs can't even retain all the features the game already has (yes, I'm a VR user, how did you guess?) I'm not holding my breath either.

Even the best external tool can not be aware of all states within Elite. I support this strongly.

I advocate for an option to turn dead-zones off on the main axes and laterals during combat, or an additional flight mode during combat or with Flight-Assist off.
Combat: deployed hard points && in combat mode, so it's not active when mining scanning etc.

Turning off dead-zones can help users with imprecise centering mechanics with FA off and when aiming with fixed weapons.
A full alternate flight mode for combat might benefit everybody.

Good luck with that (and I really mean that!), but I already filed a petition for key repeater for pip settings. That would be so easy to implement, but as it is now, the only way to realize that is by using 3rd party tools. And assuming that curves are quite a bit more complex, I wouldn't hold my breath...
Key repeater sounds like automation so they probably wouldn't want to add it.
