More or less what the title says. I've repaired my modules and only turned the selected ones on, somehow forgetting the sensors.
In space, you can't tell they are off as you still see planets. If you are in inhabited space you will notice as you will visually see ships in SC and not see them on sensor or in contacts. But as an explorer far away from anything you have no reference.
Anyway, on my way to Colonia I threw quite a few hours away trying to find geysers, only noticing that the sensors are off when I arrived to Colonia and all the ships I saw were invisible to sensors. Felt pretty stupid...
ANYway, my suggestion is that the sensors screen in the ship is blank (or some other visual representation) at all times, blind for stars and planets, too. This way I'd notice sooner that something is not working as it should.
