Hardware & Technical Please rate my £1000 upgrade.

I have a wry smile of money coming my way and have a grand to upgrade my i5-750 2.66mhz, 4gb ram, 8800 gts pc, specifically for Elite.

I plan on keeping, and overclocking the CPU, upgrading to 16gb ram and getting a gtx 970. Also a TrackIR, Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS and Sennheiser PC 360 headphones.

All this comes to about £780. Before I go ahead, can anyone see any improvements on my plans?

Thanks.

Well you will probably have to upgrade your power supply unit going from 8800 to a top-range nvidia, that's another 100+ quid. Also make sure your ram is the right speed for your mobo, no point in getting expensive ram if you have to down-clock it.

The headphones will probably be great, I have some Sennheiser HD 518's - and they are awesome headphones!

Considered a new monitor or an Oculus Rift?

Save £300 for the commercial version of the Oculus Rift a must I think.

I think a 970 should be Ok for the rift, for elite anyway.

Or if you can bear to sit on the money, wait for the gtx 980 to come down in price;)

My monitor is a 23" LG Flatron 2ms response. If I were to upgrade I wouldn't go any less than 32" which is a little expensive at the mo.
I wear glasses and have a lazy eye, not sure if the Oculus would be any good!

A GTX 980 struggles with 1080p on a DK2. :)

I think SLI 980's will be needed for the CV1 or whatever top-range graphics card is out at the time.

CPU is dated and will bottleneck the gpu from showing its true power, even if you push it to 4Ghz, which you may or may not be able to do based on your other components.

the 16Gb ram is a bad idea. If you're really going to invest money in 2 gens old DDR tech, then just get 4Gb more, it will be enough for absolutely everything.

You also didn't write your PSU. It's perhaps most important of all.

Id go for the best screen i can get, the best keyboard, best chair and speakers. 250 On each and the majority on the screen and youll be sitting cosy for years. Those things dont really go out of date. All they ram and other stuff devalues wothin months. And these human interface upgrades are winners in every day use. Loads of ram wont make yourvdaily web surfing any better but a lovely screen amd cosy chair will. Same goes for music and typing up emails and daybto day stuffs

I've got a Sennheiser pc363d headset, brilliant. Superbly comfortable and the surround effect is very effective. Sound quality is excellent with more than adequate bass. Expensive but I would go for these again if I was buying headsets.

motherboard that supports SLI so you can go to SLI at some point.

SSD disk.

PSU - might be powerful enough but how old is it?

8GB of RAM to start - you can always upgrade later.

The type of GPU you are going for you need to make sure the CPU is quick enough to utilise it.

PSU sounds great. That CPU will need to fly though to justify the gpu in cpu-intensive games.
Just don't do the mistake of investing in old architectures more than you have to.

I may just do that!

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm gonna wait till the release date gets announced and decide then whether or not to purchase a new mobo and cpu along with the rest of the stuff.
Take care all.

After much deliberation and about £200 over budget I've decided to go for this bundle here:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus...ial-mx100-ssd-plus-8gb-ram-plus-i7-4790k-plus

Going to add an MSI gtx 970. as well as the Thrustmaster T-Flight hotas, TrackIR 5, the Sennheisers and I may add the Voice attack as suggested.
With perhaps the Astra voice pack here:

I reckon I'll be set up nicely for a good while!

Thanks very much to those who replied.

Im not arguing the thrustmaster t-flight, everyone using it seem to be happy with it.

But, on that budget I would seriously consider putting slightly more of it into the hotas. The x52 would be a good option, it has great value for its price and enough customizable functions to cover whatever the game can throw at you ;)

Just my thought.
