Engineers Pls remove wake scanner data

Its really getting dumb with this afking at station and scanning wakes, when else would you use this useless "utility"?

<snip>when else would you use this useless "utility"?

When a target high wakes away from you that you want to kill, loot or pirate. Mission targets will sometimes high wake away from you.
Any time you see a high wake, instead of camping a station.

If you want to use it more efficiently, pick a good station with lots of CMDR traffic, such as a station hosting a trade CG.

i can see fanboys incoming already,
only this wake data are keeping me from upgrading FSD, i always scanned every wake i saw, just had bad luck, so now i have to sit near station and scan if i want it.
Also dont call be boring, or i might call you something else

And nah, so far past this 1 year i play, it happend to me once that enemy i was hunting jumped away

All I do is when I exit a station, check if there are some high wakes, scan them, and go on my merry way. No grinding needed, usually get 2-3 when I leave.

Fit a cargo scanner and a wake scanner. Sit outside a station and cargo scan the NPCs as they leave. When you find one that has something interesting, such as a mission required cargo, wait until they have jumped and then scan their wake. If you then high-wake, you will end up in the same system that the NPC jumped and near where they have dropped out of supercruise. Drop down to their position and you will find your prey waiting for you with some nice tasty cargo.

@Op - I think most things things have been covered, I use the wake scanner to hunt cmdr's after they high wake, have also been hunted across systems many times by fellow cmdr's during community goals.

@Limoncello Lizard - Good info, I only thought the wake scanner worked on NPC mission targets, good to know it works on regular NPC's

Edit - Does anyone know if NPC's now carry commodities used by engineers?

I tried to cargo scan a ship once... pressed wrong button and rubbed his back with plasma. Then I was subsequently eviscerated from existence by station weapons and security.

After that I just went to a HAZRES bounty-hunting instead. It's safer.

Scanning and chasing wakes at stations to acquire data for the Engineers reminds me of dogs sniffing other dogs. After that image entered my head, I've reduced my scanning somewhat. Can't seem to shake it. Ah, well, it'll probably pass.

Should build a wake sniffing sidey and call her Fido (or Rex or Buddy or Bella or .. ) now if only we could make it raise its leg when dumping cargo.. (or would that be a nr. 2 [hotas])

I firmly agree that these materials need to be removed. No matter what people say, you don't get them during normal play. And sitting outside stations doesn't exactly seem like engaging gameplay to me. That said, I am thinking that maybe the materials are specific to types of FSD upgrades, so it might be possible for players to help each other out on this one... But that's just a theory, I still need to test it.

The game does not revolve around you, you may not get them in normal play trading your hiney off in solo, but in pvp, and assassination and kill pirate missions they are used frequently.

You mean by dropping into a wreck USS and getting it as normal scan? Or as mission rewards?

I actually am more of a combat pilot, so I should be getting them quite frequently. Problem is, they hardly ever jump out during the fights, and when they do, they wake is 20 km away. And I don't count missions rewards as a source unless explicitely stated so. And for the wake materials, they're not. Plus you can even get carbon from missions, so materials from them are more of a bonus than anything. As for the assasinations: are you insane?! With the current AI taking one might as well be signing their own death certificate.

Out of curiosity, what types of wakes are people looking for? I briefly fitted a scanner to one of my freighters, ran scans as I was arriving/leaving stations (never sat outside a station scanning) I soon realised that I can get all of these through mission rewards.
