POI or hooning around

When we got mapping that let us find and drop straight into POIs on planets I initially thought 'yay, no more driving around for hours looking for another couple of rare materials, just go to the volcanic site, shoot all the needle crystals and get on my way'.

Now, I mostly only visit the POIs for the scenery - I found I actually miss the driving around following the scanner to the next rock to shoot. It might take a bit longer but it's more fun than trundling around a small site hoovering up the mats in a small area.

Is that just me?

No, I agree, its fun to just drive around an attractive planet and scoop up the odd meteorite or outcrop as you go.

Luckily, its possible to do both... POIs if you're in a hurry, and random outcrops/meteorites when you want to just goof around for a bit. Particularly recommended on long expeditions when its good to get out of the ship for a while :)

No, it's not just you: worlds are varied, POIs aren't. Once you've visited the same type twice, you've seen all it has to offer. Meanwhile, world generation can still surprise you even after many hours.

Personally, if I'm not in a rush to get some material (and I pretty much never am) then I prefer driving around, looking at the landscape and the scanner.
There's also that while gathering the old-fashioned way, I find a bigger variety of materials, which might also come in handy later.
