Point Defence, Shield Boosters or Chaff

Firstly hello everyone. Newcomer to the forum here.

Been enjoying E:D immensely since launch and wishing I had more time to play it. I'm currently in a Cobra Mk. III (not fussed about upgrading to a bigger ship at the moment) and mainly doing delivery, pirate lord/deserter and massacre missions.

I just reached Competent yesterday and took a massacre mission to take out smugglers (the type where you have to interdict them - not the CZ type). I managed to do a couple but in both cases barely escaped with my ship intact. I'm not a great player and both assailants were also ranked competent and gave me a difficult time.

In my utility hardpoints at the moment I've got shield boosters and point defence. My question is: is this the best setup or would I be better swapping one of those for chaff?

Any advice gratefully received - thanks.

I use a shield cell bank instead, & run with two chaff launchers. Keep them both assigned to the same trigger, but keep one powered down until the other runs out. Shield cell on the opposite trigger.

There are direct hotkeys for launching chaff, heatsinks, and SCBs. I find these less cumbersome than fussing with firegroups!

I am still relatively new to this game, but I do not feel like there is a sure-fire answer to your questions. This is where the fun begins!

You could choose more chaff or point defense, and run into an enemy running with plasma accelerators/rails. You can run shield boosters and scbs and run into some huge incendiary multicannons and a feedback rail. There is no great way to be sure that you have all of the advantages ahead of time.

My recommendation: Try things out and modify when YOU notice a reason to. That has been my philosophy so far and I have learned a lot.

I use both, I have shield cell set to TRI+L1 & chaff to CIRC+L1, & also both on a seperate fire group for when im bricking my pants, panicking & forgetting my keybinds :)

My Cobra - which I fly a lot - has a shield booster and a chaff. Booster for landings, chaff for escape. She's very fast so I'm never around for long

since you can't have it all it depends on what you expect to encounter the most. if missiles are a common threat for you the pd is handy but, are they? also, an a0 booster gives you a 20% buff on ... a tiny shield. better than nothing but you're not a tank, so maybe some extra utility could be more useful. chaff or heatsink come to mind :) there will always be a threat you can't counter, time to bug out and a heatsink makes for a good smokescreen.

but it's up to you, there is no formula.

Shield Cell Banks aren't really useful without heat sinks. Sure you can keep your shields up but when you cook your internals and start having gun malfunctions... I only use SCB's on my ships with massive shields like my 5000mj shield Vette since it can spare a utility slot and optional slot for the combo.

Also if you're in Open Play and someone who has a good build to tank shields comes along you won't have time to pop that bank trust me.

Point defense comes into play in PvE combat zones as everything in there has some kinda missiles. Otherwise, chaff works. I tend to load up on shield boosters with bi-weaves.

same here. reason is the cmkiii shields are weak, and a booster pushes them above a critical value for me. while pointdefense are only really usefull when shields are down.

on a 4 utility ship i usually run chaff + 2 boosters + pointdefense in cz, and swap the pd for kws if bountyhunting.

on 2 utilities you have to decide more carefully in accordance to ship and your piloting style - my viper for exampel has chaff + pointdefence, my sidey double chaff ...
