Point defence turret or no point defence turret?

Hello,

I have a Viper load out that I am using for under mining, currently in solo mode, and would like to ask peoples opinions if it is worth investing in a point defence turret for incoming missiles. I have done a little bit of research, and I have read that the damage from incoming missiles is very minimal and that it is not worth it. However, I think that some defence against missiles is important.

Is there a general consensus about whether a point defence turret is worth equipping?

Thanks.

Missiles are extremely rarely used so there's no point wasting a utility slot on a utility that won't be utilised. It's basically not very utilitarian even if the little green laser pulses or tracer rounds or whatever they are, are pretty. Go for chaff or maybe shield boosters (can't remember what the shields are like on a Viper, might not be worth boosting...) instead.

Missiles do next to no damage to your shields. If you find yourself often without shields, point defense might be worth it. If you are pretty good at keeping shields up, they don't give you any further benefit.

Viper has strong shields, but simply no power to fit a single Booster.

Double Chaff all the way.

On a ship with two or less utility mounts there's more important things you want to fit but if you've got spare slots (like on an FDL) it does no harm and when it shoots down a missile its worth every penny!

Point defense turrets have their place. One of my ships is a T9 and because it is so slow at turning I have 4 turrets to help me out.
They can work well but don't use them around stations. I did this once and hit the station by mistake when I was being attacked by a python. The station fired back at me
taking me out. So turn them off when not needed.

1. The lovely pyrotechnics are worth it if you are in a large craft and can afford to use the slots.

2. I get missiles fired at me loads in RES - I think they are still nyaff but what if they get buffed up?

3. The point defence also clears up mines (anacondas and pythons have been laying these in front of me lately).

4. Don't bother with one on a viper. ;)

I believe there is a general consensus about PD turret, which, sadly, is currently the following : lol.

They are not worth their weight/price/power consumption (which are all very low, mind you) in the current state of the game, imo.

Since the effect of missiles on shields and large hulls was nerfed missiles really are no great threat, mines, never were.

I actually almost lost an Eagle once to mines a Cobra was dropping. First took the shields down, second took me to 14% hull.

Of course today shields would soak all the mines one could possibly fit
