Ship Builds & Load Outs Point Defence

It is my understanding that Point Defence modules are set to fire automatically right?

Well recently i took a beating from a Python (i think) and he unleashed a volley of missiles and such and after running for my life :) I stopped to repair and reload. My multi-cannon took some ammo but my point defence did not, suggesting that it did NOT fire. Is there a trick to getting it to operate?

Yes it is powered on the modules screen.

Yes, they fire automatically when a missile or mine strays into their range and radius of fire. I'd guess that the missiles that were fired at you didn't impinge on their fire radius, so they didn't fire at them. What ship do you have? Are your Point Defence modules all on the top for example?

This episode happened in my Cobra with PD's on both utility mounts. I also have them on the rearward mounts on my Vulture.

I could be wrong (at work so can't check), but aren't the mounts just on the top on both ships? If the missiles hit you from underneath, then they wouldn't have fired.

The other possible cause is that they may have been disabled due to power requirements when your hardpoints deployed, although you'd get a very visible warning in the middle of the screen should this happen.

I don't have access to my Cobra at the moment but a visual inspection of the Vulture confirms that ALL the utility mounts are dorsally positioned.

I guess I had better "keep my head down" in the Vulture during a missile attack. lol

Or you could perform a perfectly executed barrel roll to bring the Point Defence into play. This is what I do. Apart from the 'perfectly executed' bit ;)

Where they are located matters too. For example. If you have a point defense under your ship but the missile is approaching from the top your PD cannot fire on the missile. So if a missile is incoming it might be good to spin to give your PD a chance to fire on it.
