POIs in Deep Space

Greetings Commanders.

Over in one of the exploration threads in the main sub-forum. Someone mentioned that there are POIs on planet surfaces to be found out in the black. I questioned this by stating that I believe they are only to be found within a certain radius of the bubble and, to a lesser extent, Colonia. They said not true.

Now it is true that I spend very little time on the ground, I am a spaceship pilot by trade ;), but I am still surprised I have never seen one out there. I thought I'd pose this to the seasoned deep space explorers in this sub-forum.

I'm not sure, at the moment. It's one of those things that has changed over time. The furthest from the Bubble that I've seen them is around Heart and Soul, but it's possible that Colonia acts as a second Bubble, with an equivalent radius-of-finding around it. Also possible that the radius is not hard, but a fall-off, so instead of being a hard cut off at (say) 10 kylies, it just becomes progressively less likely that you'll find something.

Back in the day, it was possible to find surface POI everywhere. Abandoned caches of Tea and whatnot all over the galaxy. Civilised, really.

What do you mean by "POI"?

Things you can find in deep space:

* Geysers/Fumaroles
* Crashed ships on planets
* Tourist Beacons
* Unknown Signal Sources (almost always a destroyed ship)

can confirm. found a crashed ship on a surface two days ago 8000 ly from sol, as well as degraded emission USS.

Yes, those things. Well I never! I must start looking at the ground more.

Edit - Maybe it doesn't help that I keep my sensors powered down!

I'm not very familiar with groundside spawns - the blue circles - but there is more to space scenarios than most people expect. By scenarios, I mean both the scenes at signal sources, as well as mission scenarios. For example, did you if you take a mission to assassinate a religious figure, a possible scenario sees you jumping in on your target to find him leading a worship of an Unknown Artefact? Frontier have made a surprising number of possible scenarios, that only spawn under quite specific circumstances, so the odds of randomly running across them are pretty damn low. But I digress, so back to deep space scenarios.

As far as I know, the farthest area where signal sources spawn is around 8,000-10,000 ly from the bubble - hard to tell whether it would be centered around Sol, or calculated from the nearest inhabited system. I call this the "wreckage area", since the only things that spawn are degraded SS-es containing wrecked explorer(!) ships. By which I don't mean that they are limited to Asps and the like, but that you find survey data cans around them. These also spawn some distance from Jaques too, albeit it seems to be much less. Never really looked into it though.

However, there is another area, I like to call it the "near frontier". These are the uninhabited and unexplored systems, with some special scenarios of their own. It's much closer than the distance mentioned above, it probably peters out at around 1,000 ly from Sol, but even at 500-600 ly the spawn rates drop dramatically. You can find more than just the odd explorer wreckage here, although those still dominate. For example, you might get a Convoy SS spawn, and meet a wing of explorers who talk about going out into the mostly unknown.

Unfortunately, like the spawns in the wreckage area, these near frontier scenarios are pretty much worthless so far too, so they are little more than a curiosity. But based on what was shown at LaveCon, that might change soon(ish).

I did find one on the other side of the core near that cluster of Nebula's to the NW of Sag A* in the Far 3kpc Arm. As I was approaching landing I saw a blue circle and was like ? Turned out to be a space probe that I was able to scan.

However, when we were discussing it on another thread here, it turned out it was still under 10,000 LY from Colonia and that's probably why it showed up. I had forgotten Colonia is now in the mix and just not the Bubble...

I certainly remember someone trustworthy saying that they only appeared within a certain radius of the bubble and Colonia. This may have changed though.
