I imagine the majority will be from Europe. And I may create further polls to determine what general area of Europe that breaks down in to. Of course this will all depend on my future travel plans... And the amount of interest.

Aww, I was kinda hoping to see more people post about what country specifically they're from as there's a huge cultural difference country to country, even if they're in the same continent .-.

edit: WHOOPS didn't answer the main topic
I think the idea is nifty. kinda like the pokemon go thing, but I see how it could be problematic for some. For instance, what about the ends of our playerbase? we have a lot of CMDRs who aren't exactly spring chickens, and I'd wager that quite a few on the other end still depend on mom and dad for transportation and I doubt that they'd be too thrilled to go driving around because it's for lil timmy's space game.

Besides, if I'm out trapesing around looking for things that may or may not be there, how will I have time to atomize pirates? ;D

No worries. I've considered the options and there is plenty time to sort them out. I was thinking some place relatively public but still out of sight or at least not overly obvious. I would post something like... "Documents relating to XYZ have been left at a dead drop in Royal Botanical Garden." and then give a cryptic description of where it could possibly be. Of course people might figure it out right away and people might never figure it out. Maybe it gets picked up by a guard and tossed out or maybe it gets discovered by someone who's never played Elite. Maybe that will get them interested in the game and they'll come crawling to the forums and say "Uhhh hey guys, I found this in the UK. What is this about?"

I want to have fun with it. I want to make it fun for you folks. But I want to make it accessible to as many people as possible, hence the poll. But like I said, I might go with more than one depending on how the game's content progresses and my future travel plans. :)

There are a lot of votes for Europe. I'd be interested in knowing whether those are true Europeans or players from the UK.

Let's take a look at Europe ;)

You can probably guess how I voted from my avatar. ;)

...or visiting a real-world location that may have some significance in Elite Lore (if there is any, I'd have to brush up on the books)...

I don't think there's terribly much as far as "real world" places mentioned in the lore you could go to. The lore states that much of the Earth's surface was destroyed by man-made cataclysms (war, global warming, etc) during the 21st century, especially the cities, which were subsequently rebuilt. As the Gazetteer entry for Earth states, "the landscape has changed beyond all recognition since then". Though this may have simply been an explanation of why most small-and-medium-scale real-world geographic features (such as the Grand Canyon) were not visible if you flew over where they were supposed to be. I seem to recall one of the stories mentioning Paris still being largely unchanged, but much of London was underwater and New York had been levelled in the war and that site too was entirely underwater; I seem to recall one of the Earth starports in FE2 was "New New York", and it was a floating city some way off the coast.

Hmmm... that might make things more difficult, then. Perhaps I can work with one of the community managers for something in the future. I'll just have to see what I can dig up. Paris is, at least, one city I plan to visit at some point, so we'll see how that pans out.

The poll is good to know when the pirate kids are sleeping (cos mumy will kick their tender parts if not) so I can run the buckyball freely. ;)
(Assuming that pirate density is uniform)

This poll will be heavily skewed in favour of Europe and North America because it's on an English-speaking forum.

Try putting the poll on other language forums? The same poll written in Spanish might show a bias towards South America.

No Thargia option?

Thargoid no vote. Thargoid upset. Thargoid destroy evil, small minded race. 'soon as Thargoid find which planet .co.uk domain on.
