The planned grouping system is somewhat unique to Elite Dangerous. Given that many backers have expressed a strong desire to play a certain way I thought it would be extremely useful if we have a clearer idea on how this is going to work out.

Therefore, I kindly request each of you wonderful forumites vote on one of the options that most accurately describes your intended play style or that appeals most to you. :)

If you haven't already, it might be worth taking a look at the grouping proposal in the design decision archive.

Here is a quick reference:

  • All Players Group– Players in this group will be matched with each other as much as possible to ensure as many human players can meet and play together
  • Private Group – Players in this group will only be matched with other players in the same private group.Players can create their own private group and invite people into it.
  • Solo Group – Players in this group won’t be matched with anyone else ever (effectively a private group with no one else invited).
  • Solo (Offline)* - This is for those people who plan to play the game in complete isolation to others in single-player mode.

This might be rather interesting

- Cheers, ;)

Cosmos.

EDIT: For clarification.. As far as I am aware, you will be able to switch between groups at any time unless you have chosen single-offline mode, in which case that commander can't join the online game. :)

*solo offline doesn't appear in the groups proposal but it will be a valid play option and so I have included here.

Hohoho .. 3rd poll in as much minutes.

I need to find some medicine ... Any medicine I don't care ;)

(Pretty sure someone did this already Cosmos ...)

Starting in the all player group for sure, however with option to restrict / filter those with egregious behaviours even if it mean to change groups class.

At this stage my intention is to play in all players - maybe it's not an "MMO" but it IS massive, it IS multiplayer by design, and it IS online ...

On occasion if there is a particular reason I might play in a small group, or even solo, but that would not be my usual preference. I want to travel, meet interesting people, and blow them out of the sky.

I voted Public Group. I will check it first and see how it goes for me. If it doesn't suit me well, I will go for Solo online

I will certainly try the all-players, but as it seems it may turn into a guilds/groups/gangs kind of game, solo-online sounds more likely. I have no friends with space hero-wannabee tendencies save for perhaps one or two, and such a group is too small.

I suspect all hostile encounters with a human in ED will be against a mob of players. Perhaps not always initially, but with the instant jumping capabilities you won't have much time mano-a-mano.

This is indeed a rather limited poll. I plan to play in all groups to start with. After the betas I will likely play in solo groups until I have built up my commander's money and rep, jumping in and out of other group types depending on my mood. Once all the expansions are out, I will probably be heading deep into the unknown to explore alien worlds and civilizations, once again using all-group play, in case I manage to find another lonely soul also exploring the far reaches of the galaxy. However, the main reason I backed the game is for the solo-offline ability, so even after the main servers finally shut down 25 years from now, I can still play the game until the last computer that can actually run it becomes obsolete.

Did i miss something or is there only one way to play this game that is set in stone when you start?
Why can't i choose between the different styles as the mood suites me?

No. you can change between groups unless you have chosen to play solo-offline - in which case that commander wont be available for online play.

I'll add a bit to the OP to make that clearer. ;)

That's a pretty solid argument for there being a a solo-offline mode :). I know people will play differently over time but I wanted to understand where most peoples focus is going to be at the present moment in time. Select the one that most appeals.. ;)

I'll start in the all players group and probably stay there. However I reserve the option of jumping to online solo if guilds/groups start to dominate
