Poll- Ironman mode - online ("All) "only? The Great Compromise

I've been reading about Ironman mode in the Design Discussion Archives thread called "Groups." We all know about the solo/mp debate and whether or not crossover should be a thing. I sort of assumed after hearing about Ironman that it would be online only, but the DDA thread does not specify, and indicates that one can still make a private group with another Ironman player.

Going off that, I assume Ironman would be available as solo as well, with the whole crossover ability. Why not have Ironman be an online-only mode? Or at the least, make it available for solo as well but with no transfer capability. That way all of those that would really like a competitive player-against-player environment can have their separation from the solo hordes who don't.

This seems like a way to please everyone I think. Want to solo/mp at will? Play a standard character. Want to play online-only with no crossover? Ironman.

If it is already planned like this, then correct me. The DDA thread did not make it clear.

EDIT: Made this a poll

EDIT 2: For those unaware, creating an Ironman character means that when your character is killed, he/she is dead for good. At that point, your character drops down into the ALL group with the option of continuing play there or starting over. This is not on ship destruction however, but upon either failing to eject or having your escape pod killed. It is basically one-life mode (roguelike, if you will). Ironman players can only ever see other Ironman players

Why do you get to decide how other people should play the game?
This bizarre "online only" thing has been flogged to death for weeks already, adding the phrase "Iron Man" does not magically make it any different.

I'm not deciding anything. I am showing an idea for a compromise solution. This "online only" thing will continue to be flogged to death even after the game is fully released. I believe my idea is a good middle ground that should please everyone.

No thanks.

Just because I want to play Iron-man mode does not mean I want to PVP.

It just means I want a more difficult PVE / Solo experience.

(Edited my post because I had misunderstood the discussion. I voted "yes", but after reading a bit at the DDF and giving it some thought I realized I should have voted "no".)

I think "Ironman" and "always online" are two different issues.

I have no opion at this point about "Ironman".

I would however like that there is a group for players who always play online and who chose to not have the option to play in ALL/Solo/Private. Players in this group should only see each other - to prevent that a player magically shows up in a system (because she or he had been flying to it in solo or private).

And does "everyone" include those people that to play the game as they want to play it? Thought not. It's just another angle on the "MP only" thing, bit fair enough, by all means suggest away as it really won't matter.

IMO Ironman mode should also be available to players interested in having this extra challenge in single player or group play. I really enjoyed playing the equivalent mode in several single player games. In fact I would ONLY play this type of mode in a scenario where lag and connection losses aren't factors.

Indeed I'm a big fan of ironman modes in any single-player game that offers it. I just propose that for this instance, perhaps we can have no transfer capability between online and solo. The regular mode characters are sufficient for that. Maybe this is a compromise solutions to help deal with the endless threads about solo/mp problems

Yes, that makes sense to me.

And when a player points out that they have been looking forward to their Iron Man game for a year or more, but that they are solo players by nature...

...we'll need ANOTHER poll, about whether players should be able to switch modes in Iron Man.

[edit]Oh, snap-ninja-prescience. See the two posts above.

And, really... what "solo hordes"?

This is now not so much metagame as wetagame. ;)

Its all just a set of network filters. There is absolutely no reason that I can think of from a technical perspective why FDEV can't allow almost complete client side customization over matching. Want 100% no-flipping online-only Iron Man? Ok. Tick some boxes. Hit 'Go!'. Likewise if you want 100% offline Iron Man.

As long as someone has the desire to create it, there is no reason it can't be saved as a preset preference. Think of it like configuring iptables. ;)

The argument that it increased FDEV's overheads is nonsense too. Network traffic is network traffic. It comes in, it goes out. Server load is almost all completely relational database tables. Cloud based everything is the norm because its cheap and simple to manage.

So yeah, I totally support every variety of 'mode' anyone would want to play. I am lazy so I haven't calculated the exact number of possible matching variations but I suspect I could count it out on my fingers and still be able to clutch a pork pie.

Feel somewhat the same...not really charmed about the way that the different modes work with people shifting from one to another. I'll wait and see.

That's actually an idea I haven't heard yet. Rather than messing around with specific grouping modes, we could all customize exactly how we want to see others or not. Great point. Screw my idea, yours would probably be perfect. Now how do you convince the devs to implement this...
