Newcomer / Intro Pondering the Gravity Well...

Can someone explain exactly what's happening while I'm avoiding one? Not how it's done, but why? My only guess is not jumping back into what would be the present, presently, too fast? Moving to quickly into the future present? Yall smarter than me. Please enlighten.
Thank you.

Not exact and some handwavium and makeupiam are involved but...

When we travel in supercruise in a system we create a bubble of warped spacetime about our ships and because of stuff that lets us go faster than light without breaking relativity.
Spacetime can be considered as an elastic sheet that gets distorted if you put anything with mass on it so a planet makes a deep pit or well in that surface the sides of which get steeper the nearer the mass you get.
When your warp bubble goes from a relatively flat bit of spacetime to the steep bit in the well it has traction issues like a car moving onto loose gravel or ice from a grippy road surface.
We get warned this is happening so we don't panic because our speed is dropping even though the 'engines' are working harder.

We also get the warning when we drop out of SCO as our ships are traveling faster than the normal warp bubble is capable of in that bit of spacetime.

That's the whole ball of wax!!! Everything must remain relative to something within our knowledge? Brilliant!!
I was watching the currently selected body numbers declining slowly while I was getting close to being inserted into star. It seems like if I can try not to go faster than =/- 10 seconds of realistic counting. Bad explaination, but it works to negate the gravity pull. Maybe, seems like.

The plasma ball maybe holds the beginning of a new comprehension. But beyond that. I don't think we currently have a mechanism for controlling travel at light speed. At a minimum I would wonder if you could even see anymore, traveling at the speed of light. These complex meat sacks of ours can only do so much, we(the humans) won't be traveling at light speed without a much greater understanding of what that implies. Not possible.

And then if you want to use mind control, that seems to be pretty effective, depending upon whom is administering it.
