Poor Man's VR Playseat (WIP)

Several moons ago I found a garden chair sitting on the side of the road and took it home in the intention to build a playseat specifically for Elite:Dangerous. Considering my limited budget (especially after buying a Vive and upgrading my computer) the idea stayed at the dream state, whilst the missus grew more and more angry about the ugly chair sitting in a corner of my mancave. So, last weekend, after gathering the materials needed (or so I thought ... the paint was nowhere near enough), I finally started building ... Here is the current state :

You can view the full galery with details here. Total costs so far : about 30€ (mostly due to the paint)

Now I can sit comfortably in the middle of the room, with a great lighthouse coverage, and the HOTAS is very nearly where it is in-game :D

HAHA I love DIY projects like this.
Such a thing has been in my mind recently for Elite.

If I tried this... my wife would laugh the heck out of me. But she does that anyway... should have seen her when I first put on the Vive for VR. At least until she tried it, then it wasn't so funny anymore. She loved it. LOL

A roomate from some 20 years back had an F16 fighter cockpit made out of wood with a CRT monitor on the end. It looked like crap, but sitting in it was quite different. It was quite nice. No VR in those days, so the wood cockpit was constantly in view and a ~17" monitor didn't do all that great for immersion.

Hmmm.. well, maybe a project for the upcoming winter for me to think about.

+1 rep especially for the blue tarp!

Maybe I can track down a dead 'go cart' frame without an engine and modify the heck out of the sucker?

yeah .. my SO looked at me like I was completely mad ... well.. she still does, but I got her to promise to try it out next weekend. We'll see who will be laughing then! :p

DIY is easier than people might think, and you get something utterly bespoke to your needs.

I know I have posted mine before but even though it's been a year in use now, I'm still surprised on how well it works.
Mine is all wood though, and built to double as my regular pc desk. The shelves that holds my HOTAS on the side swivels out onto the U-shelves and the end result suprisingly is it takes less space than my old desk, both in depth and width. And does everything I need it too.
Entirely built using 2x4" some 2x2" and a couple of hobby boards I had hanging around from before, I had to toss on some steel mounting bracers just to keep things stable in some joints but after that it's all steady as can be.
All cost was about €40 give or take a few.

Here it is in desktop mode:

For my next project I will definitely have a plan, with this I just kind of started building off a very basic idea..

Great stuff CMDR Moon - living the ED dream. Repped for creative newspaper recycling.
Is it cat-proof?

I like how in ED mode, your wallet is placed within easy reach for instant fine payments to GALCOP! :D
