Newcomer / Intro Poor miner

I tried my first attempt at mining as it seems it can be quite profitable but all I managed was around 900 credits. I only have a Sidewinder and so only have very little space but is there anyway and telling which asteroids are worth mining and those that are not?

To tell which asteroids are worth mining shoot them until a piece flies off, the composition of this piece will tell you what to expect in the rest of the 'roid.

To tell which rings and belts are worth mining look at the description in the system map. Metallic is better than metal rich and pristine is the top category in resources.

Do asteroids recharge after a certain time? I found one with platinum in it but I could not extract enough to make up one ton. If I log out and log back in later would the asteroid I was mining have 'regained' its ore?

No they don't, and I actually think their output is a bit limited- BUT if you log off and re-log on (quit game- restart it) it's automagically full again. You have to find it back again the in the asteroid field but...

Asteroids do not recharge, what they contain is total random. I made an experiment with a friend. We both mined the same asteroid at the same time, and we got different materials out of it. In the beginning you will have a smal refinery, don´t search for expensive materials, take what ever ist above 15%, because you only get between 8 to 12 pices out of an asteroid.

I am painfully close to having one ton of platinum so will keep trying till I complete it. After that then yes, I'll take whatever I can find :)

Good luck Colaris,

I ent minng in an Adder with a good refinery. I made 760Cr (before costs) in an hour. You are doing way better than I did :lol.
I concluded I a have a lot to learn about mining, so good thread to start I have noted the tips from the experienced. I might give it another go post 1.3

So well done on 900Cr thats 20% better than myself- you have to start somewhere!

I'm just using my starter Sidewinder, I haven't got far into the game but just got lucky with the ore. I have found that ones with platinum in them do not contain very much so it does take a little longer. 80% so far so not long to go.

Check out the field on the system map, you tend to get smaller chips off a field with poorer reserves. You also spend much more time scooping. I used to work a common reserve metallic asteroid field and would simply ignore most of what came off as it was not worth the effort. Only scooping anything worth >£5k per tonne. This way even with minimal cargo space (I was using an Adder at the time) I could make a decent profit. If you scoop everything you will just fill up with crap that is basically worthless and make sod all money. A class 2 mining laser speeds up the chips but as far as I could tell made no difference to what they contained.

Come the next upgrade it would be interesting to try mining again as I haven't done it since I got my Cobra and went rares trading. Just too slow to make a decent profit with all that scooping.

Yeah only mine in planetary rings, and stay away from Resource Extraction Sites.

All i did when i got the game was mining, i had the sidewinder with no shields and as much cargo and the best bin i could get, and it only took a few lucky trips of gold platinum or palladium to upgrade to a hauler, which means more cargo so you can stay out longer, the only down side is the lack of weapons, so if you do get spotted by a pirate the only option is run as fast as you can. but after 2 or 3 runs full up i managed to get a cobra with a 6 bin i think, and that makes it so much quicker.

i did that for a bit to buy a a spec Viper to have a go at RES bounty hunting (just to get my own back) and protect the miners i once was. i now run a A spec'd Vulture and am having a load of fun melting Anacondas and Pythons, and getting paid for the privilege.

I still have my Cobra somewhere, i keep meaning to go back to it and do some more mining, its a good change of pace.

Stick with it you will be suprised how quick you make money when you have a bigger cargo hold and a bigger refinary bin. after all its all pure profit.

Early on in development you could go to an asteroid field and you would find say 10 asteroids and each asteroid had a set resource. Pretty quickly people realised you could mine it jump out jump back in - identify it again mine it and repeat ad infinitum

Now each time you jump in the field is randomised
