Pop-up menus

What we really need is some sort of pop-up menu system.
Before long we'll end up with so many keys bound to various things it's going to be easier to learn to play the piano.

And it would be nice if we could remove some of the clutter from the firegroups.

For example all we should need is one key for scanner. You could then pick which type of scan you need from a pop-up. Without all this nonsense about changing modes etc etc.

You could say the same for limpet controllers.
One limpet controller for everything - then a pop-up asking how you want to program it.

A utilities menu. Lights, cargo hatch, landing gear, deploy SRV, fire limpet etc

I'm sure there are other examples.

The whole concept of technology is to simplify and improve.

This is why we no longer twiddle radio dials, have indicators on cars - instead of sticking your hand out of the window. We have central heating, we have climate control so you're no longer fiddling about with heating controls etc etc.

Making the game unnecessarily complex and confusing is contrary to common sense and the rules of technological advancement.
And it doesn't improve usability or player enjoyment - it just makes it look like a pile of uncoordinated, badly though out .... (insert rude noun here).
 
So basically, this is what you are suggesting

Scan target using KWS:
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to scanners
* Now in a POP-UP menu, navigate among ALL available scanners to my KWS
* Scan target


Scan Wake using Wake scanner.
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to scanners
* Now in a POP-UP menu, navigate among ALL available scanners to my Wake scanner
* Scan wake


"Honk" the system
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to scanners
* Now in a POP-UP menu, navigate among ALL available scanners to my Discovery scanner
* "honk"


So while in this POP-UP menu is showing, I assume we are gong to be locked out of all other menus.



Now compare the above task to how this works today.


Scan target using KWS:
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to KWS
* Scan target


Scan Wake using Wake scanner.
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to Wake Scanner
* Scan wake


"Honk" the system
* Select correct fire group
* Hit the fire button that is assigned to Discovery Scanner
* "honk"



I would rather have the old system instead of POP-UPs...

I do not agree.
For new players it is recommended to spend some time to get used to things around. After sometime they'll see no complexity, everything will be in its own place.
As for "technological advancement" I would rather appreciate a cord connected right into my brain to control the ship with my thoughts.

Tend to agree really. In fact, if that "YOU HAVE NOT ASSIGNED A FIREGROUP" pop up would disappear (and never, ever come back) I'd be a happy bunny.

Best advice I think OP (because see what you're saying, though don't fully agree) imo is to think of the Control Options set up page as a part of your ship's onboard info systems. Even though - strictly speaking - it is part of the menu. It's not far away if you think to look there?
