Port Forwarding and Elite Dangerous?.

For the non techie minded members like myself, what are the pros and cons of port forwarding for Elite Dangerous?. I remember there was a thread on it a couple of years back but I couldn't find it using the search function so thought I would start a new one. I followed the advice in it at that time and had PF set up on my instal until last week when Virgin upgraded my Superhub 2 to a Superhub 3. Since then I have noticed that the mission board can take longer to load and I also get a partial load at times but then find posts here at the forums saying many people are having various server related problems since the v3.0 updates started, so unsure what to make of it?..

hi, I have to use port forwarding. my firewall doesn't support uPNP, uPNP basically will create a port on your router allowing inbound traffic to pass through. when using uPNP the port may change each time your play elite, which is fine.

because my router, well firewall doesn't support this, I cannot get inbound traffic to hit my computer. I have therefore opened a port on the firewall 5111 and have a rule which passes all traffic to my computer which hit my firewall from outside..

ideally , you wouldn't use it, as the ip number can change on your computer, especially if the lease of the ip on your internal network expires and your router gives your computer a different ip. any rules on the router would need changing to point at the computers new ip address.

I have had to fix the ip on my computer to make sure it doesn't move.

only use if you are getting network connectivity issues and your netlog file which elite creates show a upnp problem

the outbound traffic is ok, and always used the same port to connect to elite servers, it for inbound really which it matters with on elite.

other players PC's will have a direct connection while you are in the same system, which is why inbound traffic is important. if they cannot connect you will be disconnected after a few mins. and you may not see other CMDRs at all.
