Portable controller?

Hi, I'm a full-time traveller / remote web-dev contractor, so my whole life has to fit in a backpack.

I spent hundreds of hours playing the BBC version many moons ago. I'm hoping to have a bit of a gaming renaissance with ED.

I'm hoping it'll will run OK on my Macbook 13" retina. I'm happy to turn the graphics all the way down - BBC wireframes would probably be fine! Anyway getting it working on the Macbook is in the hands of the gods - what I need advice on is the controller.

I need something that's portable enough to carry around with me all over the world. Ideally something that looks like a console game controller but with a throttle.

I guess I'll probably end up using a standard game controller. Which one is best?

OK so here's the twist... I'd love to use an Oculus Rift with it. So I won't be able to see the keyboard. It seems a game controller is going to leave plenty of controls missing... What do I do?

if you're willing to carry an occulus and all those keyboard gadgets.. why not just get a compact joystick? and use voice commands for the rest
