Portable VR Cockpit

I'm working on a cheap(ish) and cheerful cockpit using an Ikea Poang. I had the TM HOTAS previously so that is not a new acquisition. I am coming from an X52 Pro with twisty yaw so using rudder pedals will take some getting used to. I also need to complete the key re-binds which is a bit of a PITA as I also have Voice Attack configured using the HCS Voice Packs.

I will still need to complete the panels for the rudder pedals so I'm about half way done. The chair has 3 USB extension cables built into it, along with some speaker cable to power the Buttkickers. The HOTAS platforms are completely removable.

Very nice, love the addition of the buttkicker!

Thank you. I currently use the 'mirror audio' feature of the Windows Mixed Reality Reverb G2 headset I have to redirect the sound so it's all working nicely (y)

That looks amazing! (y)

How are the HOTAS platforms constructed?

Appreciated, thank you. They're constructed from plywood (first time using this rather than MDF). I drilled a couple of holes into each of the Poang arms. The bottom of each HOTAS platforms have a couple of threaded inserts in them. I can place each over the top of the arms and use 'Knurled clamping knobs' to secure them from underneath. It takes about a minute to fasten them securely.

Thank you for a detailed reply!

Very much appreciated, (y)

Nice work.

Appreciated :)

Another thumbs up from me for such a neat and tidy job. Added elbow pads are a wise choice too. Looks great.

Thanks. A lesson learned from using a desktop setup with crummy armrests !

No problem. If you need any info, let me know.

Very clean and tidy, good job (y)

Ah yeah, the chair is pretty cool also!

Haha, thanks (y)

Not a patch on my previous project which didn't make the last house move. Work stopped on that the day my mum passed away and never got started again. I don't currently have the space anyway. A real shame really.

Love the clean minimal style. Very nice and +1 on the buttkickers. I love the kick you get when hitting the booster and the different rumbles when transitioning from things like orbital cruise or FSD.

Thanks and yes, gotta love Buttkickers!

Outstanding work man.

Can I ask an offtopic question - are you a Highlander of the clan McLeod?

Cheers and not that I'm aware of!

Like the touchpad.

Been meaning to get something similar myself.

It's definitely a useful addition, particularly in VR.

That's a very nice looking rig. Didn't realize until later in the thread that it wasn't professionally done. (y) At first, I was all like, "WOW! I could order something like this from Ikea???" 😲 And then I was like, "Oh... they're just that good at that kind of thing..." and trying to pretend my PVC pipe and 2x4 monstrosity never existed. ;)

... and trying to pretend my PVC pipe and 2x4 monstrosity never existed. ;)

I think the secret of prototypes is that they have to be really, really ugly. When I prototyped my first chair, I made it look pretty good, and it worked so well that I kept using it for more than two years. When I protoyped a gizmo for my new chair, I made it hideous. I've already replaced it with a nice one :).

So you're halfway there! Stare at that thing until you can't stand looking at it any more, and then make something that works just as well without all the shame and self-loathing!
