Positive VR Experience at the Farseer Canyons and exploring a crater in the SRV

Hi,

I just thought I'd share my most positive experience with in VR to-date. I've being playing ED since the beta (2014) and I've had the Vive for a couple of months now. I've played around with VR settings as suggested on these threads. Using the SS 2.0 in SteamVR and SS at 0.65 and VR High in the game settings has been acceptable for me using a GTX1070, obviously I would like it to be better, but that's for other threads.

Playing ED in VR, even in the state it's in, is still the best VR game experience I have, yes I know there's other exciting stuff out, but they don't hold my attention for long. I love space and the idea of exploration and the big black nothingness out there (obviously with a few objects floating out there too). But the most awesome experience to date has been skimming the canyon floors at the Farseer Engineer's base in my Asp Exp. The views from the Asp canopy are spectacular, especially seeing the ground zooming past a few metres below going at full boost. I would love to do some canyon racing with other players. But come to think of it, the Asp isn't the fastest horse out there, but it does have the perfect VR view, may FD need to make some racing ships with glass floors!.

I've also had a go at exploring in my SRV and collecting materials for the first time since I bought Horizons last year. I hesitated on doing this activity because I didn't have the controls configured nicely and thought it sounded a bit dull. However, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed driving the SRV and appreciating the gorgeous views from the surface a moon back to space and all those beautiful stars and nebulae.

On another trip I spotted a feature in the centre of a huge crater of another moon I was passing by in my Asp, and decided to go explore it. Originally I thought was a giant meteor in the centre, but as I got closer it appeared to be a mountain in the centre of the crater. I landed my Asp on the peak of the mountain and decided to go exploring in my SRV, hoping to find some metallic materials on my way down the mountain. Hold and behold, plenty of materials to mine and collect. I even found a ship wreckage with Gold and Platinum cargo canisters littered around the crash site half way down the mountain.

During my time on the mountain in the SRV a wing of three Federal Vipers came to buzz me to see what I was doing on the ground, soon after another NPC T9 appeared and also flew close by. For me this was a refreshing experience ED, and has rekindled my love for the game. It has got my hopes and imagination going again of how great ED can be. I hope FD continue to improve and expand the game as they've planned, if they can improve the game using their planned expansions and can keep improving through the years to come, I will certainly be supporting them. How else will I ever get to explore space and planets in VR? I have faith the FD will deliver in the long run.

To summarise my rambling after a few glasses of wine. I do not regret my purchase of Vive, even if the experience is considered sub-optimal by some at the moment, yes it could probably be better (but I've gopt nothing to compare that with). Back to topic, so tonight I raced through Farseer's canyons and was blown away by the terrain (the fact that it's procedurally generated), and discovered the joys of exploring and traversing a mountain inside a huge moon crater. I was even visited by NPCs wondering what I was doing (luckily they didn't want to kill me or blow up my ship). I love this game and I hope it only gets better!

.... its only a game for those still using monitors. For us, its real. Currently bounty hunting in high res sites - found one with lots of high value trafic, condas fdls cobra iv's with ringed planets and nebula's close by. Stunning views.

Combat is intense in VR, probably better in a smaller ship, unfortunately I only last a few seconds in an Eagle in a combat zone before popping like a firecracker. It's still fun watching my beam turrets and MC's follow and fry targets in my annie of course!

I still use my 4K monitor for long boring trade runs to give my eyes a rest. Jumping from star to star burns my eyes out using the Vive HMD, it appears too bright!

I have found that while I can switch back to 2d with a track IR ok for flying, driving the SRV is bad in 2d. Driving down a steep cliff in VR is breathtaking. I've found that if I turn on the lock horizon option, it helps to convey the massive scale of the mountains and canyons. VR really is a awesome experience.

I am on a slow run to Sag A. There are a lot of boring systems out there, but every once and a while you come across truly spectacular vistas and planets that just wouldn't be appreciated outside VR. This game is certainly one that must be seen in VR and the Asp is an ideal ship for the experience.

I think you could buy an Eagle on Garay or close by. Put enhanced drives on it at farseer.
That should pass muster for some racing.

I second TotTorden's idea of going to buy an eagle ands some Enhanced Thrusters. I'll be on my way to Farseer tonight to do what you just did but it will take me some time to get there in my eagle. Talking about the canyons, I heard that those near Farseer are not procedural but hand made, I hope that's not true.

I'm 16,000LY out from the bubble... the canyons out here have probably never seen human eyes, not even FD devs!

I've boosted down some deep ravines, accidentally bounced my Asp off a crater rim doing the dive-in-and-boost-out, and shot off high cliff tops in my SRV at 40m/s. All great fun in VR.

Can thoroughly recommend Arena/CQC for a change of pace and good action in VR - -you can really tell when someone else is using a HMD compared to the poor sods in 2D with 'blinkers' on heh!

I find it pretty obvious that all the engineer bases have been customed, no way the area around farseer came out of random generator without heavy touching up afterwards.

That's also why it's as great as it is.

TorTorden, I think you are probably right, but maybe the customisation is limited to how the base sits on the surface of the planet. I'll keep a look out for varying topography of the other moons I explore in future.

soupdawg,

I totally know what you're talking about. When I fired up my Rift for the first time in E D, I was really amazed. One of the most amazing moments was when I flew down to a moon. Awesome. Driving in the moon buggy was so damn cool. I was like ... "Huston, the eagle has landed."

Did a canyon ride in an Eagle a couple of days later. Hell, yeah! That was such an intensiver experience. I almost fell off my chair. I got a bit motion sick, though. The turns were too fast and with FA OFF, it almost ripped me appart.

Once I hovered above the ground 30 meters or so and switched to the external view and watched my ship down from the ground. Awesome! It just hoved up there. It was amazing.

So, as my fiancee will go on vacation for a week starting next week, I'm going to play E D all night after work. Without annyone annoying me. Greaaaaaaaaaat!

So your fiancee is going on holiday without you? Doesn't this ring any alarm bells? Just kidding :D

Try Arena/CQC - the aerobatics (space-o-batics?) are really intense in the Imperial and federal fighters. Trying to put an asteroid between your paper-thin hull and a pursuing fighter is great fun!

It should ring a bell but it doesnt. lol. About to leave her anyway. Only a matter of time.

Did a few CQC fifhts. It s great.
