So quick summary. Some commanders are having issues with selecting certain suits and this causing the game to crash straight to desktop.
I have just managed to fix my version. The solution was rather simple.......Re-installed the game from Steam.
The suit that was causing the crash can now be modified and upgraded without the crash.
Can't think why I didn't think of it earlier.
I've tried launching from Steam and launching from the standard launcher and both methods are now stable without the crash. I assume both launchers access the same game files. The Steam installation must have overwritten a dodgy graphics asset.
