Possible issue for griefing?!

Hey,

I'm fairly new to the game and not sure how the whole griefing policy works here or if there even is such thing. As an EvE player I'm used to lawless player interactions, but usually the NPC adhere to some rules and the game masters and DEVs are very strict when it come to exploiting NPC behavior for ones own advantage.
I'm not complaining since it was just minor incident and nothing bad really happened, but I want to raise awareness about this.
The following happened a couple of days ago.
I was bounty hunting in RES and another player was there, too. We more or less ignored each other, since we both weren't WANTED and there have been plenty of targets around. As it happens at some point we're both seem to be gunning for the same target, it was a big fat Ananconda if I recall. While i did my run at it, he and I were both enganging the target, shooting, and he came fast from above behind me and (accidentally?!) bumped into me. This must have caused some damage to him, no idea. I was fine but I got fined and a WANTED status and all the System Security started picking on me, so in the end I had to abort and dock to pay off my fine, I lost out on the big Anaconda bounty and he was still clean when I left... this kind of stuff has big potential for grief play....just IMHO.

Would it be nice to have a system in place which either totally ignores penalties on collisions, or can determine who was the initiator or at least gives both player the same punishment?! Otherwise if you want get rid of someone but maybe can't handle him solo you provoke him into WANTED status and get help from all the system authorities.

What do you think?!

There is currently no punishment for "ramming". I suspect you clipped him or a security vessel with weapons fire as he bumped you leading to a bounty on your head from that.

Ramming inside/around stations will be outlawed shortly but not elsewhere. It is a known exploit/weakness/bug and from what I read is something the Dev's plan to fix. Currently in RES and combat zones a "gentle" ram that does virtually no damage is the codeword for stop stealing my kills, although due to overenthusiastic players this often turns into a massive bash.

If you think you are about to get rammed throw all pips into systems to boost your shields, assuming you're trying to avoid the collision you shouldn't take any hull damage.

Edit: In your case (assuming he was also a newish player) I think it was probably an accident rather than a killstealing warning but avoiding all players (hostile or neutral) is usually the safer bet :)

It was probably friendly fire. And yeah its quite common unfortunately.

It is even more annoying in Conflict Zones. Sometimes I get the feeling people deliberately fly into an other commander's line of fire. A stray bullet is enough to make the shooting commander turn hostile (to EVERYTHING) and previous allies usually proceed to kill him before he has a chance to escape. IMHO its currently broken and needs to be revisited.

Also it would be great, if players in conflict zones would start to use their brains instead of shooting everything that is red on their scanners. I have lost track of the number of times where the same commander who had a friendly chat with me 30 seconds earlier now mercilessly tries to kill me because I accidentally hit an ally...

Dat bounty hunting tunnel vision. If it's a player and they are wanted as a BH you should honestly assess if they are worth it, check the contacts and see what they're actually worth.

I would reply the same as the others.. But I had a similar experience last night.

Was taking down a wanted npc, had him close to 10% hull.. So I boosted into him with my vulture
Then it pops up that I have a 5000 bounty for murder of the guy... Not sure what happened there.
I've been playing since beta.. And this is the first time this has happened

I wish I had shadow play, to have a recording of it... but alas I don't.

If it happens again I'll do a bug report... Otherwise this could become a huge issue with the new bounty system coming....

If you see another player in a res, try asking if they want to form a wing. You can then farm the res together, share bounties and not be get a bounty if you accidentally hit each other.

Yep, and anyone who ignores your comms should be watched closely for ram attacks, diving through your fire to make you wanted or waiting till your shields are damaged and going on the offensive.

I would also suggest winging up next time you are at a RES and there is another player in the area. I believe friendly fire is no longer an issue, when you scan a ship all wingmen get the info (when the scan completes), you can (if you both have microphones and speakers) talk verbally to each other, and if one of you gets into trouble the others can head over and help out.

The best fight I had was pre Wings, when I was in an Asp at a Nav. Beacon, and two other players in Eagles turned up. We then took it in turns taking out wanted ships, until a powerful Anaconda turned up. We all went to work on it, none of us took friendly fire, and when it blew there were a lot of virtual "High 5's" going on. I don't know who got the bounty (it wasn't me), but I don't care. It was a good team effort, and a lot of fun.

Another example from a few days ago:

I was bounty hunting in a Viper at the Quator nav, when another Viper cmdr (competent) entered the area.
We checked each other out, and then both continued our thing, while respectfully trying not to steal any kills.
A 3rd cmdr joined, this one was in a Vulture (expert).
The 3 of us continued, dividing kills as they came along, allthough the potential profit was getting lower by the minute.

At some point, the Viper guy must have strafed a friendly, because suddenly he appeared wanted...for 200Cr.
Without hesitation, I see the Vulture engage him, and kill him in no time.
Oh wait, the Vulture was wanted too!
I open chat to the cmdr..."how much was that CMDR, 200Cr?". No reply.
And I start kiting him (with my weapons retracted), boost-strafing in circles, to display my obvious air-superiority as a warning.
"Run, man!", I said.
It took him over a minute, to realize I was giving him a chance to escape the security (and ultimately, me, if he decided to attack me).
He finally got the message, and jumped away.

Should I have killed him?
Also, for 200 lousy Cr?
Wouldn't that put me on the same "level"?
I just hope he will think twice next time, before going for such a cheap kill, with other cmdrs around.

Highly possible that the player intentionally obstructed your line of fire and caused you to fire upon him, since the slightest player friendly fire will garner you a wanted status as long as you two are both clean. You will meet a lot more of this kind of player, even worse in Conflict Zone. Wish you luck.

Collision damage current cannot possibly generate a fine or a bounty.
