Possible minor new game play.

I was doing a retrieval mission at a distress signal. The ship I found there was an undamaged sidewinder. The only thing wrong with it that I could see was that it had two degraded power regulators. The pilot was on the ground outside the ship. Has anyone ever tried replacing the power regulators with good ones? The possible game play would be: A player takes a retrieval mission using APEX for transport, there might be scavengers at the sight. They would scan the dead commander for his ship security rating. After replacing one or both of the power regulators the commander would be able to enter the ship. The commander could then proceed to a station to sell the ship at a low security station, get a finder's fee from the insurance co at a high security one or get to keep it for themselves at a medium security station. It's a pretty easy game loop and everything is almost in place to do it. What do you think? For those commander's that have crew they could have their crew follow them back to the station in the salvaged ship. I have seen full ships at signal sites while gathering materials. A few repair limpets and the same thing could be done.

AFAIK, those crashed ships are not actual working ship models, just fixed assets that would be impossible to enter/fly.

I like the idea, would be even better if we were able to pick up the deceased pilot and return him with the ship as well. Lots of possibilities for this in relation to bounty hunting, rescue, etc.. especially if we also had a non-lethal take down that added extra value to the mission when capturing a wanted person. We could go to an illegal settlement with some pods and round up all the wanted guards.

I think it would be possible to place a flyable ship in these situations. If the pilot was alive and hunkered down and we fended off the attack, they could give us a lift back to the station, or alternatively Frontier would have to adjust the internal parameters to let us board and fly the ship, which I can't say is a simple process or not as I know there are still some dependencies on your docked ship that restrict what you can do on foot.

You don't even have to go to Odyssey to get some "interesting" relative pricing.

A Sidewinder has a hull value (minus all the equipment including the E-rated core internals) of 4070 credits, and a mass of 25t, so is made of something with a value per tonne of at most 162 credits.

There are no in-game commodities with a typical sale price anywhere near that low; there is only one commodity (Hydrogen Fuel) with a Galactic Average price lower than 162 credits. The commodity "Scrap" can be sold for around 700 credits per tonne, so you would make a roughly 400% profit by buying Sidewinder hulls, breaking them up, and selling them as unsorted scrap.

Shame there isn't a scrapping activity.

Now it feels more like:
"I have a Sidewinder that is full of biowaste..."
"Keep the ship, I'll take the biowaste"

Not to mention the price of the ship at the vendor has a lifetime insurance priced in too. That should be a majority of the price really.

They are like printers, sold at a loss for the ability to sell consumables to the owner.
