Newcomer / Intro Possible to move from Horizon to Odyssey to Horizon again without issues?

So i'm currently playing EDH and was thinking about trying Odyssey out (i have it available to play) just to compare it really. Now IF i don't like the current state/performance of Odyssey is it possible to revert back to Horizons and carry on with the same commander with no problems? Can i make a new 'test' cmdr perhaps (on one account? not sure how that would work).

I think i have read there can be problems with your account when going from Odyssey back to Horizons, but i'm not sure where that info is right now.

In short i'm curious to try Odyssey, but don't want to 'break' my Horizon's game as most likely my hardware will not be up to running Odyssey that well (W7, Ryzen 5 1600, Nvidia 1650 Super 4GB, 16 GB Ram). Suggestions?

You should be able to move back and forth without issue - but you may have problems with your binds so back them up to avoid tears. CAVEAT: I'm not 100% sure so please wait for confirmation from other CMDRs better clued up than I am.

On your specs, your GPU may hold you back but I was able to play on a 1050ti. There was jerk-o-vision a-plenty but that was well before any optimisations had taken place. You will most certainly have to ramp down on a few (maybe quite a few) settings but you should, at lease, be able to play.

On the whole EDO thing... for me, I couldn't go back to EDH now. EDO provides much more in the way of gameplay opportunities. The only downside - for me - is raw material gathering: I preferred the EDH approach. EDO, and ED as a whole, has a lot salt being flung at it at the moment but you need to play and make up your own mind. To me, it's a fantastic game and I play it waaaay too much :D

As with everything ED, YMMV.

Hope that helps!

Disclaimer: I don't have EDO. What I heard, though is:
  • your binds should be ok - EDO and EDH use different binds files (3.0 for EDH vs. 4.0 for EDO). But we're talking about FD here, a backup of your binds is never a bad idea.
  • at least before U11, you will lose your CMDR personalization at one step. I.e., IIRC when reverting from EDO to EDH, your CMDR appearance will be reset to the default faceless mask. My guess is that the CMDR personalization does not use different save slots, and the EDO CMDR setup is not backwards compatible to the EDH CMDR.

I've done it several times, I'm new also (1492.9 hours). I play Horizons mostly until I think I'm ready for Odessey (I have 55 hours on the training app). It starts me in the exact same spot in either game, Odessey is much more beautiful than Horizons, I'm running Windows 10, Threadripper 24/48, 64Gb RAM, EVGA 3080 XC3 Ultra 12Gb and it looks and performs nicely (mostly exploration).
