Possible to support the Alliance faction?

From the lore I've read, you've got your choice of three major factions you can support: Federation, Empire, or Alliance.

Most of the posts or articles I've seen mainly talk about Federation or Empire. Based on the lore, I'm really not crazy about either Federation or Empire and their ongoing conflicts.
Is the Alliance more of a minority? Or are all the small local factions what make up the alliance as a whole? Are there areas of the game where there's a significant alliance stronghold?

...ugh, so many questions. ;)

Pretty sure Alliance is last on their list. There was a mention in 2.02 changelog about alliance rep. I'll be heading out there soon myself.
Yes they are a minority.
Yes go up in the galaxy map. Set just to alliance and zoom out.

Alliance capital is Alioth, I'm currently 'friendly' with them for some time and working towards 'allied' in the hope that I'll then get a permit to Alioth itself.
There are a number of Alliance systems clustered nearby, and a few juicy independents ripe for conversion, including a high tech system. There's another smaller cluster (around 40LY away from Alioth) near Yuqui Bab, which is less well populated with Cmdrs but has good trade runs if you have a decent range FSD.

Do keep a look out when you're pootling about as there are some Alliance controlled stations in all kinds of places. There is one at Ross 210 and I was able to cash in an Alliance bounty there as well.

Lets not forget Lave and some neighbors are Alliance space now. That's where I'm going to assist with influence expansion.
