Post 2.2 bad lag and planetary stutter

Performance is pretty good for me, but I have noticed an occasional skipped few frames as I approach planets. It's almost like there is some pre-emptive loading/calculating going on so that the transition is smoother when it eventually streams in. It's a compromise I prefer to pre-2.2 but perhaps this is where some of the issues you see are coming from.

As for remedies, I'm not too sure - I know that shaders are cached on both AMD and nVidia cards these days, but the behaviour is highly driver dependant. On AMD you can force shaders to cache by creating a game profile. Nvidia seem to attempt it regardless of whether there's a game profile or not, though if your drivers aren't detecting Elite then they may not be able to cache the shaders correctly. I believe the shaders are cached to the hard drive, so anything you can do to improve the read speed of the hard drive where they are located might also help (making sure drivers are installed on your fastest HDD/SSD/turning on super-fetch etc.), though I guess they are loaded into memory when you launch the game?

The only lag I get is from stations :(

I wish when docked, you could go to a 2d interface only. I hate how my gpu/cpu ramps up the most of the entire game when I'm docked looking at station interfaces but it still loads the 3d star port in the background, same with main menu that I cant even see.

Zero issues since update, that's both planetary and in-space.

I've been stacking Skimmer kill missions around various outposts on the same planet so there's lot of transitioning from surface to SC and back to surface again and there have been zero slowdowns or CTDs for me in the 5-6 hours I've spent going back for more missions.

Agreed cmdr DirkLarien

What is texture quality vs material quality

What is terrain work? (CPU VS GPU)

What the actually fudge does ambient occlusion do other than steal 10-15 fps

On topic

I am also noticing stuttering on planets, but I'm not having the issues of menu's taking ages to load, and I'm glad to see the missions screen actually respond within a week :)

Same here. Including sound drop outs and complete freezes for one second ish. EDIT: res site, with npc crew member.

Had a wingmate last night who went into slideshow mode when approaching a planet. I could see his position inidcator warp and stutter and rewind with each frame update. He said his hard drive was grinding like mad.

I suggested that he knock his graphics settings down to low, and when he did that his framerate went back to rock solid. We didn't have time to do much more experimentation, but the plan was to go into advanced options and keep upping different settings to find out which one was the offender.

From the way his hard drive was going I'm guessing it's textures or something similar that is eating up a ton of RAM and it's having to write to the page file on the HD which is an absolute performance killer. But for anybody looking for a quick and dirty workaround for the stutter until a fix is in, lower your gfx settings and see if you get the same results.

Interesting.

I keep a performance monitor open on my second monitor and my RAM usage never jumps above 4gb when approaching/landing on planets.
