General / Off-Topic Post Brexit: Petition for a new referendum

Hi all,

So the EU referendum has taken place and the largest display of democracy (I have seen in the UK) has concluded with the Leave campaign winning.

As I understand it, Some people do not like the way it's gone and have started signing a petition to the government to enable a 2nd referendum to be held as there wasn't a 60% majority and under a 75% turnout. Last I checked this had around 900,000 signatures.

I apologise if any of the above figures are incorrect but I am doing this off the top of my head - still I think the above is more or less right.

What are your thoughts on this?

Under our current Laws, if a second referendum can be called if:

  1. The winning vote gained less than 60% of the votes
  2. 75% of those legally allowed to vote did not vote.

However, I seriously doubt that a second one will be called. If it did happen I would be very concerned about what would happen next and I think we'd be in an even bigger pile of horse dropping than we are now.

They are just wasting their and everyone else's time. As their leader once said...

I think if there is a new one Scotland should vote separately.

They wouldn't be allowed to as they are still part of the UK (at the moment).

However, the Scottish government could call for a independence referendum to take place at the same time. Perhaps with a question like this...

If England and/or Wales vote to leave the EU and Scotland votes to remain, should Scotland be independent from the UK and allowed to stay in the EU?
- YES
- NO

The number that have signed the petition already almost matches the difference between those that voted leave and those who voted stay. I bet that it's not just people who voted stay signing that petition!

Why do they want a second vote? Surely they must know if they win it by a slim margin all that will happen is a third vote and forth vote and on and on....

Just a bit of silliness really, akin to those people who go on endlessly about how their team was robbed in a match.

The realty is, we lost, Farrage won.

Given the reaction from Farrage and co, I would think there will be riots of there is any hint of another vote.

The best we can hope for now is Scotland uses the opportunity to finally end this ridiculous union.

Then hopefully, England can finally get it into it's thick skull it just isn't great any more and never will be again.

That petition is totally pointless- Something I posted in another thread first.
That petition wont change anything .. the rules for the referendum were laid out for anyone willing to pay attention .. and it was simple, whom ever gets the most votes wins. They do have to discuss this in Parliament as it has over 10.000 signatures .. but the discussion will probably just be "Oh that .... next!"

No matter how many signatures it gets it remains pointless ..

The truth here is that David Cameron and the remain camp all believed that 'Vote remain' would win, but they did think it might be close so they chose the 'first past the post' vote which is, like I said above.. whom ever gets the most votes wins.. so that if it was closer than they thought they would still win.
They could have gone for a % win style referendum, but they chose not too as they foolishly and arrogantly underestimated the 'Vote Leave' people.. they were wrong.

A second referendum being called would make a mockery of democracy .. and make the UK a laughing stock around the world.

People have to just accept that the vote has been made and the majority voted to leave the EU and move on ..

/hyperbole mode on/ you wouldn't ask for an Olympic race to be re-ran if the second placed runner came in a little too close to the winner /hyperbole mode off/

Again im with pointless, it breaks the petitions terms, this is something that has already been discussed in parliament and as result any vote that ends in democratic negative cannot be brought back to the table, we were told the small print from the word go. Its those million+ people who voted remain who are now signing the petition.. even if it gets to 5 million the government cannot act.

Also,

The UK's European Commissioner Lord Hill is to stand down, saying "what is done cannot be undone" after the UK voted to leave the European Union. Further proof that there is now no action UK democracy can take to veto the vote. It is done, time to band together as a united kingdom and not a Ex Euro welfare state.

I doubt that there will be another referendum. :)

I don't know how UK internal politics Works, but to ignore something like this, pretty much a political suicide. Their peril. one thing is sure after this, the brexiters are going down, so as the people who in the same time trying to stay in the EU and out. We seen where Cameron gambit leaded right?

Remember when Farage said that if the result was 48-52 they should make a second referendum? He conveniently forgot, but Pepperidge Farm remembers!

(Also, right after he "won", he said he never promised the alledgedly wasted £350M on Europe would go to NHS. It's not like he had it written on a bus or something.)

I doubt that there will be another referendum. :)

Considering that the referendum was itself non-binding and that the PM has said he's stepping down.... What I think should happen is a new round of elections in the UK with the new government deciding what to do regarding the EU membership and how to proceed from there.
