Post live stream feedback

A picture worth a 1000 words....

At the end of today's live stream, Arthur said that he is well aware of the players' frustrations and FDev is working around the clock to address all the issues including the horrible performance and lack of optimization. I believe him, but that is only one part of the problem.
The other part, the one FDev chose to ignore , is the fact that they over hyped and sort of lied about the NEW content that will be available at launch, yet I have not seen anything that remotely resembles the stuff we saw during the pre-rendered trailers.
The planet tech looks exactly the same as it did during alpha, some will argue even worse!
The missions are exactly the same as the ones in the alpha
nobody has seen any new settlements or star ports. again, everything looks exactly like the alpha
and of course, no new ships, no new SRVs or weapons (ships or FPS)

during today's stream, you showed the same game play from the alpha. There was nothing new, same old dark boring sky - nothing that we haven't seen already.

This is the issue I am having with Odyssey right now. It feels like you released the same alpha branch with minor UI tweaks . Heck, even the fake Armstrong moment is the same.... how embarrassing.

Honestly, if someone had told me that Odyssey was developed by a small indie studio with a budget of 1 million dollars, I would totally believe him. That's exactly what Odyssey feels like right now - a cheap work by a struggling developers with very limited budget.

I don't think this DLC is worth $39.99. At best $7.99 and I being very generous.

Hope for the best, expect the worse - Frontier clearly delivered on that one!!!

I am super sad at the moment that I can't play the game because of the performance but this "DLC" has an absolute crapton of content and it is mind blowing how much stuff they crammed into it.

And frankly I am getting so tired of seeing this stuff all over the web. Gather up a team and build your own dream spacegame and spend endless sleepless nights when you come to the realization of how incredibly massive the workload for it is if you don't like what FDev has built. I don't agree with a lot of choices made in Elite, but I do step back and grab some perspective as I've experienced what game development is behind the scenes. After all, it's still humans building it.

Just my 5 cents, you do you.

I am not disputing the fact that Odyssey introduced new stuff to Elite. My point was that they reiterated multiple times after the Alpha that the release version will have a lot more stuff added and the planetary tech will be vastly different and improved and none of that is true - at least not right now.

So this is the same thing Hello Games did with NMS, then CDPR with Cyberpunk and Fdev with Odyssey - over hyper a game and under deliver. I would have been totally fine if they said "what you saw during the alpha is pretty much what will be released" , but they didn't and that's my issue.

my 6 cents...

The fact is, they released the game despite knowing exactly how broken it was. Even worse - clearly someone at Frontier thinks they can get away with it - which tells you everything about how much respect they have for their customers.

can you really blame then after seeing how much CIG can get away with... or even CDPR with Cyberpunk... it's the new reality / new normal :)

The new planets are very bland. I'm an explorer and was excited for the new terrain, but Horizons planets had much better detail from a distance and each one wasn't grey.

We're back to the beige planets.

Honestly, things like new guns and settlement layouts are kinda pointless if bugs toss people into space and keep them leaving their ship. Its amazing to me that with so many features people begged for, they still managed to make a such an unappealing update. Space Legs was a top tier feature request and yet people are choosing to stick with horizons because of how buggy it is. That is horrific.

care to share because I haven't.
I walked into a bar in a tourist settlement in the Frey system. ( Satellite of Frey 4? I can’t get onto my computer to give more info.) A NPC pulled a gun on me immediately, and I ended up shot down and woke up in the jail cell of a prison base (Ship?).

Just look at the list of settlements, and look for something with a “touristy” sounding name.

I think there's something funny going on with the planetary tech. Like it's rendering everything at a lower level of detail than it should be. They'd talked about improved mountain ranges and canyons post-alpha but the mountain ranges I've so far seen look like a simple noise function -- almost a collection of sine waves -- which is maybe what they should look like from a distance but not when you're nearby.

Also, I get "jumps" between LOD as I'm flying around where new textures just switch on in a jarring way. It's not horrible (certainly better than the textures jumping around all over the place we had originally) but it's maybe a symptom of something else.

Maybe the LOD calculations are doing something funny, maybe optimising the planetary tech has cancelled out all the improvements, or maybe some value was tweaked during a deadline that's had weird repercussions. Or maybe I just haven't looked around enough.

Also, I think (and I haven't explored enough to be sure) that there are far less rocks than before. This is possibly to keep the SRV racers happy, but it drastically reduces the new sense of detail we had in alpha.
