Post Release Competiton a real possibility

Daivd Braben was very kind to answer my question in today's ask me anythng

Ben Ryder - "Will there be a competition and a trophy for the first people to reach Elite?"

Nice idea! Yes, we certainly should do something - though this would be post-release.

Any ideas?

I thin some trophies would be cool.

Lan battle?

Trade over time?

It's not the winning . . . it's the taking part!
Although a trophy would be nice.

This: I would not want to encourage munchkinism, min/maxing, power gaming etc. or tie it officially with the public image of Elite. If anything, reward the fans who create amazing stuff (art, videos, fiction etc) and promote their enthusiasm. The lady who made the amazing metal Cobra model - why not get her in to the studio with it, do a meet n greet and take her picture with Mr. Braben? That's who we should 'reward'.

A community manager/PR person would eat that up and everyone is happy.

I totally agree but how about those who can't make a model and are into the whole idea of getting an elite ranking and being great at a game they love. Some recognition for them too?

Not trying to on you Ben, I mean we disagree about a lot of stuff but that's all good. :D

I just think that since most people who play the game will only have a few hrs a week at best and given the fact it may therefore take them 10 years to become Elite, isn't creating a sentiment of first past the post a poor reflection of the 'experience'? In 'real life' winning is everything; most of the world's winners are cheats or worse. In the cuddly slightly edgy alternate reality of multiplayer gaming (wlol) should not success be it's own reward? Whenever, if ever, that comes to us?

I'd definitely go with promoting people who create cool stuff (tm). I think, like the last few remaining WW2 vets we see in the news today, they, by virtue of being the only ones left, represent the ghestalt of something greater.

I think a prize for first to the "elite" status post is a fantastic idea.

The original Elite had something like this I believe. If you sent your save game or something into the publisher you'd get some sort of recognition.

It's highly unlikely I'd get to Elite first anyway, what with wife, kids, demanding job etc...
but IMO it's certainly be in the spirit of Elite to have some sort of prize or something for those who reach Elite first.

By all means, have prizes for creativity and so on, but don't ignore us Laserheads in the process! ;)

Tonight, I shall mostly be doing burnouts in an empty carpark and drawing a 40ft Cobra :D

Edit - not that I would seriously condone such an antisocial and potentially dangerous activity... hmmmm BUT - if I did it on the top floor I could maybe get it on Google Maps..... ;)

The guy gets to sit about the house all day every day 24/7 playing elite, and if that isnt enough jam for him, he gets a prize too??

I think it would be more fitting if the last person to get to elite should get the prize as a sort of sympathetic charity thing.

Like the game of old - reach Elite (in any of the 4 flavours) and receive a sturdy badge.

Reach Elite in all 4 ... maybe a plate / trophy.

Unlimited numbers .. nothing for being 1st other than recognition on the forum.

:)

You have a very valid point. I was thinking of single player rather than competitive multi-player.

Some people love the idea of wining prizes and being the first past the post. A sense of achievement found in most games, sports and fun stuff. Elite gives out ranks.

What difference would it make to the casual gamer if there's a prize like a big medal for single player? I guess it might make them feel part of the big fun run.

If I remember rightly I was spurred on in the original elite to get the golden eagle award or whatever it was. There were TV programs with slots for people competing in computer games and all that kind of hype. It was fun to be part of and think not only will I have a great time, I'll have a real life something to remind me of that great time (that no one in the real world cares about but is special to me).

I''m an amateur artist in my spare time. I'm all for creativity but art and creativity is highly open to subjective judgements whereas something as simple as a race has a defined outcome. No, my painting of a space station is better than your poem about an asteroid.

I think it comes down to a prize for single player rather than multiplayer; the first to find the Thargoid home world, the merchant with the biggest ban roll, the pirate with the biggest bounty. Achievements with a real life reward too. It can add a positive group experience to a highly solitary pursuit.

By the by we actually agree on a lot of stuff. I like to mix things up

You're already going to get multiple people playing a single character just to say "first"... If there's a prize it'll only make things worse and I guarantee the first Elite will not have been attained legitimately, by one person. Nice idea but a complete fail in the modern era of gaming.

Very true Jakobai.

I remember a rank 15 character on one server in Lotro arriving, it was a huge accomplishment.

And then it transpired it was actually an extended family playing at all hours and farming themselves :(

I believe this has been discussed already. I think there is going to be a "competition" to create amazing artwork/screenshots. I don't know anything about any possible rewards though, other than the fact that you were at that place and time.

It's not a bad idea as long as they can make sure no one hacks and cheats.
