Post your best gaming moments

Had a few.. but this one probably takes the cake.

I'm gonna go back.. way back to the mid 90's, to one of the first RTS games to have multiplayer capabilities, Command and Conquer, networked on a 2 PC LAN.

The game pitted you against an opponent in a battle to construct and deploy potentially huge bases and armies using limited resources. The winner was the player who destroyed all his opponent's bases and units. You could potentially develop hundreds of units and the game could last from a few minutes to hours. The longer it lasted, the greater chance either client would crash or you encountered the infamous unrecoverable 'connection error'.

It was in the end of one of those looong games against a friend where that 'best gaming moment' happened.

In the preceding hours, we had both managed to destroy all our units and bases, except for 1 unit each. He was left with a tank, and I was left with an infantry soldier. Now the game was balanced in such a way that a tank found it hard to accurately shoot a small unarmored target like a soldier, and a soldier found it hard (but not impossible) to penetrate the armor of a tank. The tank's better strategy was to attempt to run over the solider and thus kill him, but the soldier was slightly more maneuverable than the tank.

So there we were, for a good 20 minutes playing opposite each other in the same room, with me dodging his tank as it tried to squish me. Amongst this cat and mouse, at every small opportunity I had, I tried to turn around, stop, fire at him, then run off again. Every time I did this, it gave him an opportunity to get closer to splatting me. On more than a few occasions I thought I was splat,
but somehow he managed to miss me (probably because though this last 20 minutes, we were both in tears from laughing our asses off whilst still trying to kill each other).

Just before the end, his shots had injured me to the point of near death, but my impotent rifle had also left him in the same state, and with a final dodge behind a boulder I gave him the final shot of the epic game.

In all the games I played before or since, it never got down to 1 unit vs 1 unit, and I never expected a game to be both so satisfying, or unintentionally hilarious.

I look forward to similar moments that ED multiplayer can potentially provide. Regardless of how good the original Elite was, at the end of the day you were always playing with AI, not with or against a friend. Like life, what point is there in finding enjoyment unless you can share that moment with someone else.

I do have a story from the original X Com game when I was playing it on my Miggy.

It started off as a standard Search & Destroy op in some god forsaken farm belt out in the middle of nowhere. Upon landing, the team were assembled in the Sky Ranger dropship and ready to deploy. The first trooper jumps out, armed with a rocket launcher and immediately spots an Ethereal floating above a cabbage patch. Being a bit on the tardy side, this trooper had no action points left and just stood there looking.

The rest of the team start to deploy all under the careful watch of this damned Ethereal. Some of the guys took pot shots at it but to no avail, then it was the Ethereal's turn.

Right away "Mr Lazy" (with the rocket launcher) is taken over and then fires a rocket right into his own squad. The casualties are horrendous, all but one of the squad are dead, although the guy who survived the rocket attack is badly injured and unconscious.

In the next turn, Mr Lazy finally comes to his senses and so I sent him to retrieve his fallen comrade and get the hell out of Dodge. Unfortunately, he once again runs out of time units before he can reach his comrade and so this poor innocent trooper dies.

Only one last thing left for Mr Lazy to do, in the next turn he panics, drops his weapon and runs off. By this time I am fuming at this idiot, but he is all I have to get that valuable Sky Ranger back to base.

Eventually, he calms down and after dodging a few near misses from the Ethereals, makes it back to the dropship and returns to base..........to face the music.

I could have sacked him on the spot (and perhaps should have), instead I gave him an "Abeyance Mission" to give him the chance to redeem himself. He was sent out alone with only a Laser Rifle and a few grenades, (well, except for a well armed and experienced pilot to guard the Sky Ranger) to face the aliens alone. Luckily for him, he was facing Snakemen this time and managed to take out all 6 of them after a fierce fire fight. On return to base he was promoted and in time became Commander of the whole unit.

THE END

Tough to call, but the first that comes to mind.

Winning 20-0 against 5 other players on q3tourney6, getting the last kill after launching across the gap, spinning 180 and railing someone on the other side of the map without zooming; on my friends 56K connection, his face was a picture.

Shortly followed by getting up and reaching for the door handle too early because I was still compensating for lag IRL... :S
I never felt more in the 'zone'.

Commodore 64 'Annals of Rome' Conquered all regions & held on to the known world until the arrival of Visigoths several centuries later...

Amiga 1200 ' XCom' Still playing this classic now, always a treat...

P.C. 'Civilization 5' Just can't stop playing this game a classic already..,
But I think Elite 'Dangerous' is going to become the game to play for all...

I never felt more in the 'zone'.

Yes, the zone.

Being one with the game where everything synchs. Lag doesn't exist and whatever you do seems to work, regardless of how risky it is.

I was in the zone a few times in the original Unreal Tournament. Now there was a game that had more heart pounding action than a bunch of hungry fleas landing on a fat cat. Best moment in that game was rocket boosting a flag carrying team mate 200 meters through the air, through a window, before landing him 20 meters short of the flag capture point. Pretty lucky considering he couldn't contol his trajectory and I only had a rough idea what direction he was launched to.

At least that game still staggers on with its freely available updated clone, Red Eclipse.
