Had a few.. but this one probably takes the cake.
I'm gonna go back.. way back to the mid 90's, to one of the first RTS games to have multiplayer capabilities, Command and Conquer, networked on a 2 PC LAN.
The game pitted you against an opponent in a battle to construct and deploy potentially huge bases and armies using limited resources. The winner was the player who destroyed all his opponent's bases and units. You could potentially develop hundreds of units and the game could last from a few minutes to hours. The longer it lasted, the greater chance either client would crash or you encountered the infamous unrecoverable 'connection error'.
It was in the end of one of those looong games against a friend where that 'best gaming moment' happened.
In the preceding hours, we had both managed to destroy all our units and bases, except for 1 unit each. He was left with a tank, and I was left with an infantry soldier. Now the game was balanced in such a way that a tank found it hard to accurately shoot a small unarmored target like a soldier, and a soldier found it hard (but not impossible) to penetrate the armor of a tank. The tank's better strategy was to attempt to run over the solider and thus kill him, but the soldier was slightly more maneuverable than the tank.
So there we were, for a good 20 minutes playing opposite each other in the same room, with me dodging his tank as it tried to squish me. Amongst this cat and mouse, at every small opportunity I had, I tried to turn around, stop, fire at him, then run off again. Every time I did this, it gave him an opportunity to get closer to splatting me. On more than a few occasions I thought I was splat,
but somehow he managed to miss me (probably because though this last 20 minutes, we were both in tears from laughing our asses off whilst still trying to kill each other).
Just before the end, his shots had injured me to the point of near death, but my impotent rifle had also left him in the same state, and with a final dodge behind a boulder I gave him the final shot of the epic game.
In all the games I played before or since, it never got down to 1 unit vs 1 unit, and I never expected a game to be both so satisfying, or unintentionally hilarious.
I look forward to similar moments that ED multiplayer can potentially provide. Regardless of how good the original Elite was, at the end of the day you were always playing with AI, not with or against a friend. Like life, what point is there in finding enjoyment unless you can share that moment with someone else.
