Post your stupidest/worst mistake while exploring

Hello commanders!

Thread idea came from the fact that I think I just made one of the stupidest mistakes just now. I'm hoping some of you messed up more than I did so I can feel better about myself. :D:D

Anyways, my first ever mistake when exploring happened after a total of 9k Ly travelled (3k Ly from my first exploration trip a while ago, 6k Ly in on my current trip to Sag A*). It wasn't surfing a binary star, nose diving into a star or planet, fuel scooping mistakes or anything common like that. Oh no, it was really stupid.

I accidentally did an emergency drop from SC.... for some reason, I double tapped the SC key, which is right next to the hyperjump key. I didn't even notice the warning saying that safe disengage from SC isn't possible so I thought I was pressing the hyperjump key. Worst thing is that I'm not even drunk and now I have 1-2% damage on modules and 1% damage on hull.

What's your worst and/or stupidest mistake while exploring?

Without a doubt...turning of the drive whilst in supercruise, whilst trying to figure out how the repair module worked.

...at least it gave me something to repair.

My first real exploration trip was almost a comedy of errors.
I sent off on a whim, a drunk whim, in my Anaconda. She was fitted out for long distance travel and super fast fuel scooping, A grade FSD and Fuel Scoop, everything else cut down to reduce the weight.
I was about 5,000 ly out from Sol when it occurred to me I had failed to fit a Detailed Surface Scanner, hear back or keep going? I kept going.
A few days later parked up at a class M scooping very slowly when #2 son had a drink related accident almost frying the wifes laptop, so I had to clear that up, in the background I though I could hear an alarm, looked the my PC and my Anaconda cockpit was full of smoke and flames, temperatures had hit over 225%. I managed to escape the gravity well but my ship was down to 52% structure, and nearly all of my modules were totally fried. Thank God for Repair Modules.

I was about halfway to Sag A at this point and nearly turned round and went home, decided against this and kept on going. I made it to Sag A* eventually and all the way back home with only one more incident in the shape of a Neutron Star which got my structure down to 32%. I made it home in kinda one bit, got 46Mil from my scanning data, and had a rather nasty repair bill, but well worth it.

Forgetting to zero throttle on jump. Thinking you have exited HS and are sitting pretty looking at a type G. Returning with cup in hand to notice you are cooking gently on gas mark 7 (120%) and are seconds from ship destruction.
That kind of stupid;)

Mine's easy enough.

Not knowing that you should hit zero throttle before every jump and wondering why my hull integrity was on a steady march to zero whenever I voluntarily jumped into a BH / NS system

I lost count of the number of times I did that . Then I found out that you can bind separate keys to SC & HC jumps, problem solved!

My worst exploring mistake was reading the forums while jumping.

Kidding aside - I once got too close to a huge gas giant with rings, in a system "lit" only by a neutron star (i.e.: dark) My safety mechanism dropped my out of supercruise but I was disoriented, in an asteroid field I couldn't see, and all the jump points out were on the other side of the asteroid field. So, I had to fly through it and far enough out the other side, slowly dodging and weaving, before I could leave. I took about 15% hull damage.

I accidentally did an emergency drop from SC....

I have a simple rule for that: before I ever move my hand toward that button I always look at the image of the target I am locked onto. It it's not another system, I don't hit it and re-think.

I'm guessing you don't like exploring then? 

I actually plan on doing another trip. Probably when Horizons comes out. Head on out with a Scarab attached to the ship and go do some exploring that way. Going down on the planets and trying to find cool features and stuff like that. I think the biggest thing that I didn't like then was I knew I could make so much more money trading but now I have a Conda (well 2 actually) and a fully kitted python so I don't have that rush to make money anymore. I think I will enjoy it more the second time around.

Nice to hear. I personally (personally mind very important caveat) think exploring is the truest and best form of play style Elite has to offer.
Good look on your endeavours CMDR and hopefully I'll see you out there.

^ This. I think it's pretty common. Also waiting for that 400,000+ LS gap in supercruise and walking away for a few mins to find you got pulled out by some moron trying to blow you up. :)

Kinda makes me wonder how they managed to develop hyperspace tech that you can jump between systems yet you're still waiting 15-20 mins to travel between objects in a system... hmm... ;)

Kinda like having airplanes that can go 400+mph but still take an hour to get everyone and their luggage on board?
