Postcards from my trip to Cape Orion

After 2.2, I outfitted a T6 explorer and set off for the tip or the Orion spur, or at least as far own as I can get. I'm taking my time, scanning every chunk of rock in uncharted systems, roaming around on planets to find materials, and enjoying the sights. I'm only about 1500 LY out. I'll post some pics to this thread once in a while when I bump into something interesting. My latest find is a system with 3 low gravity, landable planets that are 100% metal content, and they collectively have pretty much everything except polonium.

Anyone up for some rock climbing?

uh, that mountain looks glorious!

enjoy your trip down our local arm.

if you want an outlook what to expect at the end, simply descend or ascend 1500 ly from where you are :)

I've found a system with 4 planets that report geysers, but haven't sighted one yet. Still nice, pics along the way.

A 1.01 g water world with nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere, a rocky moon, and three high metal content planets within a few hundred ls. A good candidate for colonization.

Oh nice pics! A Type 6E and mountains - talk about ticking my boxes.

I left for Beagle Point long before the whole Engineer update happened so my Lakon Type 6E has a low jump range. Have you modified yours?

No engineer mods. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a purist :)

jumprange 27.7. The T6 is a lovely machine.

I intently followed your recent adventure. Wonderful stuff.

Had a few anxious moments after I walked in on some sort of clandestine activity. I found a system in which two planets have polonium (gathered 15 units in about 30 minutes) and one has arsenic. On one of the polonium planets, I found some wreckage with scanable empire data (see the screenshot in a previous post). Then I moved on to the arsenic planet (no arsenic found, sadly). I was following a high band return that I had never seen before, when over a rise, a familiar shape suddenly appeared:

My heart skipped a beat. I retreated behind a little hill and observed him hull down from the turret position to consider my options. Was it a CMDR, and if so, what would his intentions be? What was he doing out in the black and landed on this untagged planet in an uncharted system? Maybe that high band return was his SRV somewhere to the north? Would I give myself away if I scanned him? What if it was an NPC? How do they behave in the black? I had no idea. I used terrain to approach a bit unobserved and since there was no reaction, I plotted a well covered escape route and decided to scan.

Turns out that it was a security forces Asp Scout that reported no faction. Since it wasn't reacting to the scan, I went around it to follow the contact and came up on some wreckage with nothing salvageable a few hundred meters north. I continued and a couple of kilometers further, I sighted another landed Asp, went around that one and found nearby wreckage, but this time with scanable Federation data. I decided that was enough contact with civilization for this explorer and quickly get back to my ship and out of the system. As I high waked out, I realized I was sweating and hypervigilant. I didn't stop in the next two systems and only started exploring again at the third. Here is a pic from one of the polonium planets just to relax a bit after this adventure:

Scary stuff indeed. It's always a shock to come across other ships out in the black. I am not surprised you were hyperventilating!

So it happened again, a few systems away. This time, two Type 9 Heavies landed near three distinct clusters of wreckage. I am not sure how often this happens to others. I have done my share of planet roving, and this has never happened before. Perhaps it is the sector I am in?

What sort of rig do you have?

I play on ultra and yet non of my screenies look that detailed. I might need a better video card.

Have some rep for great pics and good taste in ships. I have landed quite a few planets, but can't say I have seen any landed ships out of the bubble. Lucky/Unlukcy most likely. Or perhaps they are sector specific?

Just passed 2 kly on my slow meander down the Orion arm. Here is another water world, and a sweet terraformable.
