Potential defensive weapon, Computer controlled rear turret.

Just a suggestions. A small rear turret like a rear laser with a little pop up screen like the cargo scoop that turns on when you arm the system. Now this would require some coordination of flying and fighting and having to activate your rear facing weapon while flying. But its an idea. Some of the bigger fighters could definitely handle it and it would make some rear attacks interesting.

Computer controlled makes me think auto-turret... no thanks.

But then you go on to explain a mechanic that actually lets you change view to the rear, aim, and fire at targets. That would be totally awesome. There are definitely some 'blind spots' on the bigger ships that smaller ships can exploit. Having a small (maybe medium on some ?) hardpoint that faces the rear would be welcome.

They would have to be balanced in a way that it doesn't eliminate the strategy of outmaneuvering your target. Maybe cover a 30 degree cone just behind the ship. That way, slower, more maneuverable ships can still win a turn-fight.

I would love that as a multiplayer feature.
Two player on the ship, and one can controll that turret (or turrets overall)
A Rear Turret could be an additional interior module.

Ya that's why I was thinking only one small or one medium hardpoint. Nothing like 2 of each or anything. Just so their blind spots aren't totally indefensible.
