Potential solution to death-penalty issue

How about loans?

Setting a player all the way back to zero can be crippling. As frustrating as it is for newcomers, it could be absolutely game-killing for someone who has put literally months of his life into this game to suddenly lose everything he has earned for just a moment's carelessness. Has been for several such people, I understand, and I have strongly felt for some time that it would be for me as well. Fear of this is severely dampening my enjoyment of the game.

So, when a player dies without re-buy money, why not simply "loan" them the re-buy money?

The loan payments could then be automatically extracted from their profits every time they make some until their loan was paid off, with interest, like an income tax. This could cripple their progress, yes. It could cripple it for quite some time indeed, especially if they lose a very expensive ship and are slow earners, but they'd still have their ship and all their gear to earn back their loan... and to enjoy the wonders of the E-Dangerous galaxy with while they do.

And they wouldn't have the gut-wrenching experience of watching several real-world months of toil and tribulation evaporate in a puff of smoke.

I agree that it would be the easy way out, but we got a lot of people here who are against it.

However, as you feel this will happen to you, jsut prevent it: never, never, EVER leave the dock with less than 5% of the value of your ship (also known as the rebuy cost). If you know it can happen to you, you got a good chance to stop it :)

I try, but I sometimes don't have that choice... for example, right after I already died and my reserve was depleted. What if a game glitch caught me at an inopportune moment and I DC'ed and was counted as destroyed when I came back? Or my cat yanked the joystick cord and I crashed into the starbase while trying to undock?

Don't ever tell me "always". That's idi... not realistic. I want a bit more of a safety net in case something comes up. I mean, yes, what we have already IS a "safety net" of sorts, but I should NOT have to start back from scratch and earn back the entire eight MILLION credits I invested in my Cobra if I happen to get unlucky twice in a row.

Also: Yes, there are people against it. There are also people FOR it, too, and I resent your determination to keep us from having what we want. Why is it so awful?

If you hate it so much, why not just ask for a "stupid-hard-I-might-as-well-go-to-work" mode that keeps things the way they are, and let the rest of us play in "easy-enough-to-give-me-an-actual-break-from-stress" mode?

I don't know who the "you" thou are referring to are, but I'm going to throw you a bone here and assume it is not me.

Regardless, I already told you I agree that it would be an easier way out, but the vast vocal majority here is against it. As such, unless the devs decide to do it that way, 'tis gonna keep being the way it is. Let's hope they increasing the loaning system.

Ta-da.

loans of up to 200k are already in the game and have been put there specifically to give new players a softer landing, once past the stage where 200k will help you are on your own - if you find yourself in a position where you could lose everything it means your eyes have been bigger than your balance and you've upgraded/changed ships too soon.

if you should crash your ship and find that puts you close to not having the credits for the rebuy you still have the option of selling a few upgrades to in increase your cash in hand, if you fail to do so its nobody's fault but your own.

I enjoy the current system, it is extremely easy to avoid not having enough money to pay for insurance. Whenever I see posts like these it makes me wonder how people manage their personal finances in real life. I understand it is a game but part of the game is having the skill to manage your in game finances so you don't lose everything.

The fact that credit exists should be your answer =P
