I have finally be able to play this after upgrading my video card after long last and having only played a few minutes I have already amassed a list of repairs. What I would like to know is what happens if your ship is a mess and you can't afford to repair it? Does the game simply restart you with another ship if you run it into the ground?

Yes.
If you get into a situation where your ship is beyond flying and you have no means to repair it, you will have to self-destruct. There is also an option to "clear save" when you first log in to the client. That wil start you again all fresh in a nice new loaned Sidewinder with 1,000 credits.
When you're starting out, you effectively have infinite lives, so don't be afraid to get yourself killed! You will have the option of taking a loan to rebuy your ship, or starting again in a loaned Sidewinder.

If some of your modules and subsystems is badly damaged and beyond repair in field, go to the Functions menu in your right panel and activate the Restart/reboot of the modules.
It will repair them a bit, "taking health" from other not so damaged and non-critical systems.
But yeah, to fully repair the ship, you either need a field maintenance unit (which can repair everything except the hull, canopy and itself) or go to the station for repairs which can be pretty pricey.
