Power and you, a cautionary tale...

So, I did something stupid. I noticed in the fitting screen that my ship was using 106% of the power supplied, so after fitting my nice shiney new pulse lasers I read up in the noob guide that you should never have it that high or everything turns off, so I duley go in to power management and turn my cargo door (9%) off and out I head to try my new guns!

I find a signal, some pirates that then get a sound hiding from me in my shiny eagle all 3(!) lasers making short work of them... and lo, what is this, some leather?!? floating in a container near where they died.... ooooh thats mine...
I put the guns away, go in to power management. turn on the cargo bay door, scoop the leather after 2 tries and then all happy with myself head back home to sell it :D

... which is when I get interdicted. some fool in a sidewinder, so, I decided to give him some of what the last pirates got! turn to face him take out the guns and... everything goes offline, including sheilds. I forgot to turn off the cargo bay doors and now I am on fire with my hull being chewed through. panicing going into module power control, turning off the bay doors and trying to salvage the situation.
With my hull at 28% I manage to get my sheilds back and get the upper hand after a bit of fancy flying, and get home in one piece.

When I get back and pay my repairs that the bounties only just cover I promise myself I'll be MUCH more careful with my power management and I suggest you do the same

Nice cautionary tale - Cmdrs beware :)
A safer way is to set the module priorities, so that it will automatically turn things on and off for you if your power use exceeds available supply.
1 is highest priority - must not turn off. Modules with the highest priority number will get turned off first. It makes sense if you look at the power bars at the bottom of the panel.

easiest would be turn set frameshift drive and a few other things at a lower priority. So when the guns come out, fsd turns off, giving you more power to play with. cant use it in combat anyways. pretty much do that to most the stuff i never use when in combat.
