Power distribution and Mass question

Hi, I've been playing for a few weeks now and still have no clue how the mass works. What does "exceeds ship mass" mean? It didn't exceed the numbers on the right.

Also, I use beam weapons on my Cobra. I have an A3 Power distributor. However, I'm looking at a C3 one (1/5 the price) and everything is in the blue. Should I buy it?

Shield Generators, Frame Shift Drives, and Thrusters have an optimal ship mass and a maximum ship mass.

Ideally you need the ship's total mass to be under the optimal mass, and it definitely needs to be under the maximum mass.

e.g. Having a total mass under the optimal for Thrusters will give better manoeuvrability, while if the ship is over the maximum then its Thrusters won't actually be powerful enough at all. Having a total mass under the optimal for the Shield Generator will ensure that the ship has the strongest shields it can, while having a mass above the optimal will diminish the shield strength, and having a mass above the maximum will mean no shields at all.

For Power Distributors, you want the best possible - *especially* if using Beam Lasers. Don't go downgrading just to save money, as you'll find your Beam Lasers will take longer to recharge.

Oh, and mass also affects jump range.

That just means that it requires less power than the one it would replace. That does not mean that it would be as good.

Beam Lasers are *very* power hungry.

Better Power Distributor = better energy weapon charging (and shields, and engines).

If you change from an A-rated Power Distributor to a C-rated one, you will find next time you get into combat that your weapons are taking too long to charge...

Explains why my weapons take longer to charge going from an A2 power core to a C3. Even tho I have more power, it isn't as efficient. Makes all the sense
