I just upgraded my power distributor, buying a more (considerably more ) expensive one but now, when I deploy my weapons I get a message saying 'power limit exceeded modules disabled', and 'Oxygen depleted in mins/secs. I have tried different power distributors since making the original change, all with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

Your power supply isn't big enough to power everything. Look at your modules and at the bottom of the screen it shows you your current power usage. You are over 100%. You need to disable modules, or buy a bigger power supply to support it.

In outfitting, make sure that you don't exceed your total output of power with weapons deployed. Power distributors use more power the stronger they are.
One tip, is to go in your right hand side modules tab, set priorities for things you will never use with weapons deployed (fsd drive, cargo hatch, fuel scoop, etc) to 2 or higher and make sure your weapons, shields, life support have 1 as priority.
you'll still get some modules disabled, but you will be able to survive and continue using your ship to its fullest.

If you cannot upgrade the power supply, you can chose the priority for units to turn off if you go over the max power supply on the right hand panel under "modules".
If you're trying to fight, you probably want to put the cargo hatch and FSD as the lowest prioty so they power down first.
For some reason, life support is put down as lowest priority by default!

The new power distributor draws more power. Set weapon priorities on the right hand panel - if you have hardpoints deployed, you don't need the FSD, so assign a lower priority and it will shut down, leaving enough capacity to keep everything running - or buy a bigger plant as suggested above.
