Power Plant

Depends on what ship you are flying also. class 1 and 2 is mostly for smaller ships, ië sidewinder, class 3 is for Cobras and similiar ships and class 4 and 5 are for big ass ships like Anaconda. So fitting class 4 on sidewinder would be contraproductive, I am not sure if you can even do that.

The more important thing is the rating, from A to F, A being best. So if you have A2 PP and fly smaller ship, you are probably good.

At least that is my understanding, since Elite can be pretty bad at explaining stuff at times.

If you can start affording alot of A rating modules it might be time to get that Viper. It's a incredible upgrade. Its like a mouse fighting a fox, youll love it

For all module slots in your ship there is a maximum size class (the number) shown, it is the bottom number in the module slot in the outfitting screen. You can usually fit a smaller module, but for e.g. shield or thrusters you cannot go _much_ smaller (in bigger ships), as you would imagine a small shield is not enough to cover your big ship or smaller thrusters cannot move your large ship's mass effectively. AND the game will not allow you to install a module that would be too small to function properly, don't worry about that :)
Generally, a larger size (number 0-9) is better (but note the above limitation) and a higher rating (letter A-I, A is best) is better in its size class.

Ain't that the true, unfortunately.

If your power plant output exceeds your deployed power usage, is there any gain to be had from getting a bigger power plant? For example, my Cobra has a deployed power usage of about 12.5MW and my power plant produces 13MW, do I gain anything from buying a power plant with an output of 14MW if all the other modules stay the same?

Good question, I don't think so. Unless there is some underlying relationship between the distributor and the plant that hasn't been picked up on?

As far as I understand, no, there's no advantage of an oversized power plant.
EDIT: Sorry I forgot this: A higher rated power plant has better heat efficiency, which might come in helpfull in some overheating situations, but I have no data as to how much a difference it really makes.

I was thinking that maybe if your power plant gets damaged it starts to lose power and with a better power plant you'd have a bigger reserve before you start to lose power from different modules?

under 1mill? yeah you've been holding onto that eagle for to long haha. You can try the viper out and suit it up well with that money.

ya i love her and dont want to let her go as to why i made the post about PP this my first ever Elite game so i dont know all the ends and outs yet

Actually, I forgot something about the power plant advantage: A higher rated power plant has better heat efficiency, which might come in helpfull in some overheating situations, but I have no data as to how much a difference it really makes.

You don't have to let her go. Find a place that sells your next ship and purchase this whilst keeping your old. You can store your old ships

Look for high tech systems, these are likely to have most of the ships you can access with your cash levels at the moment

Well a higher rated power plant may be lighter but as it's producing less heat for a given power output your signature is lower which will reduce your detection range and increase the length of time you can be silent running for.
