[Power Play] Important Request to BETA players

EDIT: Ok this has been answered finally! No, selling data is NOT a way to gain reputation. And it can't be sold for the bonus perks until you are ranked with the power that offers that bonus, so no need to hold on to the data. Thanks to Galten75 here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=147381&p=2281526&viewfull=1#post2281526 for answering this. Much rep :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure the policy about sharing information from the BETA sessions - maybe you have a non-disclosure, in which case I retract this request.

All being legal, could someone please find out this important piece of information:

Can we use exploration data to "rank up" or "gain rep" or anything similar with the powers? Will it have any new "use" beyond its current use of gaining rep with minor factions? What about the exploration-data-interested powers - what do they give you for it? Are there any perks or anything to achieve with the data?

If someone could find this out ASAP you'd be benefiting a lot of explorers currently dry-docked, unsure about whether they should be saving their data for 1.3

Thanks a lot guys, we might actually be able to play again if your findings are good :)

I doubt that there is any non-disclosure policy to the community, though i dont share your concerns, cos i'll probably be out for another couple of months at least b4 i return to civvy space.

The Thargoids would have wiped out all traces of civilisation b4 i get to sell my data.

I understand your frustration though in waiting with a ship full of data, not knowing what the next upgrade will mean for explorers. Glad it'll all be ironed out b4 my return

There is no NDA, however any info you get from a beta may change before full release. (Not likely though).

As for exploration data to gain rep. At the moment selling data will gain you rep with the minor faction controlling the station you sell it at. Gaining rep with minor factions aligned with a major faction, also gains you rep with that major faction. Keep a lookout for CGs that want data as well. If I come across anything specific in the beta I will post it here :)

Ooh forgot about that one. I'm on the beta list but haver never actually done any beta testing! (just did it to give support to the project)

I can hop on and see if THAT bit works if nothing else!

Not only is there no NDA, a 1.3 Beta Forum should appear shortly that we can all read, or jump into and ask questions of the beta testers if they're not telling us what we really want to know.

Yup
We also need to know any other changes that effect explorers, such as selecting items on the system map.

Yup, true
I'll test it if I can. How much data do you need to sell to go from friendly to allied with a minor faction?
It's about 5.5 million cr from neutral to allied. But I don't even know if there's a ranking system for powers at all so I doubt it helps.

Hehe I was about to post a link to Michael's answer to a question about exploration data he was asked in the latest Dev update... Then I realised that it was you that asked the question ;)

I'm a couple of thousand Ly away from civilised space at the moment, normally at the start of a beta I just destroy my ship and return to play around, but this time I'll make a bee-line straight back to sell the data and see what it does, but as Michael answered you I don't think there's going to be any benefits for selling them the data until you are very friendly with them at least.

Just on a side note, you say that you're dry docked until you decide whether to sell your exploration data or not, but why not just buy another ship and play around doing other things? You can then swap back to your exploration ship and sell the data at a later date if you want to ;)

Yup and he was EXTREMELY informative as usual.

And I'm not sure you realise this, but if you die - in ANY ship - you lose all your data. It's tied to your pilot, not any ship, and it seems to be embedded in some chip in his brain. Would be great if you could "store" the data or at least have it tied to one ship :)

I have not tested this specifically, but I do know that the exploration data stays in the ship that you scanned the systems in, as I have still got a couple of systems data in my Cobra which has been sat in a station for months. It would seem odd that the data is tied to your ship, but also tied to your player as well, because then there would be no reason that I couldn't sell the data I have in my Cobra when I'm flying around in my Asp.

Have you actually tested that is the case? If you have then it would be lovely to get some clarification from one of the team as to why it is somehow linked to both, but not interchangeable (long shot I know :p)

Not personally but it's a known fact as far as I've seen all over the place. For example, the wiki: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Explorer
And here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=86425
and here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=135010

I've never seen anyone say anything else. There is a bug that the data stays on a ship sometimes - maybe that's what's happened to you?

Would be GREAT if I'm wrong :)

EDIT: I just tried switching ships and the data is still there. Unless you need to change station too, but I highly doubt that and I'm not risking it :p

It is possible that I just wasn't paying enough attention to what was going on as the only time I don't sell the data is if I'm doing short runs and don't get far enough away from the system.

I'll test it properly later tonight/tomorrow, once I've sold my current data in the beta I'll scan a couple more systems, swap ships and then fly a little way away and do something silly :)

If it's anything like the last beta, you may actually start off the beta with no exploration data on you, and need to acquire some in the beta itself first. Between the limited amounts of data you have and the artificially amplified effects that these small changes will have on power influence and, er, power (for the purposes of the beta), it's not going to be an easy thing to quantify. (Of course, once the full version is out, you still have all you carry right now.)

If I remember correctly (entirely possible I don't ;)) last time they took a backup of the game a week prior to the Beta being released. I've been in the void since the Titan hunt, so I should still be out there albeit a bit further back from where I am at the moment.

The other point you make about the amplified effects for the Beta is a very good one, as I doubt very much if they will tell us exactly how much the effects will be amplified by.

They have already stated that the new ships will be extremely cheap, and that the powerplay variables for sector control will be grossly exaggerated for testing purposes. Everything will be dialled back for release.

Yes indeed, so any information that we get for drkaii may not actually be of much help as we will not know how much they have amplified the effects. Still maybe there's a clue hidden amongst the massive change log that's just been put up ;)
