Power Play looks great.

Power Play: Thoughts?

It's officially been announced and I can say I'm a happy chap.

Looking forward to the release :)

And I was almost right in my speculation and so were others haha

Thoughts?

Yea it looks freaking amazing. My only disappointment is the fact that there will be no passenger escort yet. But still, it´s alright. 1.3 will be amazing!

EDIT:-
I do hope there's an incentive in Powerplay to attract people to ONLINE mode...

My fear is people will want to be as effective/competitive as possible in Powerplay which will actually entice them away from ONLINE into SOLO or GROUP mode, which seems counter productive?

In reality what use is Powerplay in SOLO or GROUP mode?

You can still influence events in the galaxy, etc. Why do you care what happens in a mode that you don't play in? Why should people that play in those modes not be able to participate?

I'm looking forward to PowerPlay... Excellent work FD. :D

Is Powerplay only available in ONLINE mode? I do hope so! ie: As an incentive to get people to play togethor! But I suspect not!

Give it a rest. How many times does it need to be said: not everyone has the bandwidth to play open - and yet we Solo players will still get to enjoy this awesome aspect of the game: join factions, fight for community goals etc.

Thanks FD - please don't listen to these twits.

Looks to me like doing the same things but with more context, hope at least the rewards will be special enough to justify siding with a power.

Actually I hoped for more interesting missions, not just a background story and picture for the missions.

Waiting for further details before I get excited

I am exploring in deep space, but might have to start the long road home and brush off the cob webs of my combat ship

PowerPlay is not specifically about PvP or player interactions. In fact it has even more to do with the universe itself, the NPC factions and ships.

Nooooo I really hope not.

Of course aligning with factions etc has a use in solo and group. Basically what you are saying in other words is no game ever has any use for factions in a non competative non PvP environment, and I would suggest 40 years of gaming where there are ai protagonists and antagonists suggests otherwise.

I see 1.3 as potentially the 1st update to really offer stuff to the solo player. 1.1 and esp 1.2 have been all about MP and its time the SP (or should I say everyone) got some suger imo

I'll not go heavily into your "bandwidth to play open", as I've not looked into that. So my first question is, is bandwidth really an issue to prevent online? Whenever I have monitored it, it's been small/low? What are the issues you encounter if you do? Multiple players in the same instance for example? A poor latency causing lag or similar?

The issue I see of course is the fact you want to "fight for community goals" while not actually participating in the community. Surely in an ideal "world" we want as many CMDRs as possible online playing togethor (ignoring trolls :))?

BTW: I have little doubt Powerplay will applicable across the three modes (Solo, Group and Online), but I'd love to see some added benefit for it within ONLINE mode to entice/reward players for participating in the community :)

ps: Please keep communication civil/polite... Please :)

Not reeally Neil. For me I love being part of the universe, and I love big space battles..... against AI. I have no interest in PvP however. I am not saying I want easy mode... I am all for having "oh sh**" moments and indeed all other elite games gave me plenty of those when a wolf or thargoid showed up whilst i was already smashed up after another battle....

but battles against human CMDRs... no thanks its just not for me (in elite)...... but that does not mean i do not want to be a part of it... And indeed the game as outlined throughout the dev process never at any point made me feel that I would have to be involved in PvP to be part of it.

I am confident however from what i have read it seems like 1.3 will be for all modes.

Fair point... It's a tricky matter of course...

If we consider a set of missions between to factions at odds with each other, it just seems a shame that CMDRs can affect these outcomes by competing against the current almost mindless AIs. Indeed, it could be argued playing ONLINE is a bad move as you're more likely to come across a "worth foe". So what we'll see is Powerplay possibly decend into CMDRs grinding away purposefully away from ONLINE simply to have a more impact.

That's of course fair enough, but surely in an "ideal game" we want as many CMDRs as possible ONLINE - For those at least willing/able to.

I understand that... And it's a perfectly fair comment of course :)

But it would be nice if Powerplay could promote/reward ONLINE for those willing/able. The danger is those "taking it (too) seriously" will actually not play ONLINE as they will be able to *grind* more efficiently off line against (stupid) AIs.

ie: It could actually make people play Solo/Group simply to compete more efficiently.

Sounds like it will bring nore depth to the game. Really looking forward to it!

It would have been a nice addition, but I was kind of expecting something similar to what they announced.

It's just proof that this game is only going to get better (I hope).

A lot of people don't want to play with other people because we know there are a lot of people (like Goons) who exist solely to ruin the fun of others.

Frontier understand this and they've given people solo mode so they can still enjoy this wonderful game. I'm glad people like you, who want to force people to play a certain way, are ignored.

Ok, if we're being civil. . . the honest truth is that I am not sure to what extent Open play would affect my 'bandwidth'. I live in a rural area in Australia - and rely on 3G broadband, which is not very reliable - I also have a small download limit each month. I have asked repeatedly on these forums (and also via customer support - several times . . .) and, although no one has been able to give me precise information, I have been advised to stick to Solo, and most of the time that is fine - although I get booted out now and then. I only once played in Open and found it very laggy.

(I bought into the Beta when it was still being advertised as Offline - just preempting any snarky comments about buying an MMO with dodgy internet - ED is the only online game I play - usually I buy discs or ownload games onto my laptop at work and transfer them to my Steam library and play them offline at home).

With respect to Powerplay - I understood you to be saying that you hoped Solo players wouldn't benefit from it. I don't personally have an issue with Open players having higher rewards for PVP combat or some such thing - but I'd hate to think I was missing out on cool gameplay just because a vocal and persistent group of players felt that I shouldn't have it. That's a bit harsh, don't you think?

.

aye, in your ideal game sure, but not in mine :)

I see your concerns and they are completely valid for your style of play, and I hope FD can balance it well for everyone.... but that sounds a lot like herding cats.... difficult, frustrating and ultimately painful ;)

Forgive me, my comment was in error. I think what I should have said, is it would be nice if Powerplay offered some benefit to try and intice CMDRs ONLINE.

Trolls spoiling ONLINE aside - it's a reason I don't play ONLINE at times - my concern is that some people with a *grind* mentality will treat Powerplay as a competition to win, so in doing so will actually be enticed to play SOLO (or in GROUP) simply because they can compete more efficiently there.

So it actually risks taking more players away from ONLINE?

ps: This is someone who plays more in GROUP than ONLINE speaking here. But I personally think it would be nice to see more player ONLINE, and rewarded for playing in ONLINE.

I think my initial statement probably did infer Solo players shouldn't benefit from it, and if it did, that was my mistake. Apologies.

What I'd like to see are more and more reasons for players to play ONLINE togethor, but my concern is many some (many) people will treat Powerplay as a "competition" and in doing so will actually be put off playing ONLINE simply to be more effect and meet less "opposition"... it would be nice if somehow Powerplay helped entice people ONLINE though by some method (where they can play ONLINE of course).
