Power Play looks great.

I'll not go heavily into your "bandwidth to play open", as I've not looked into that. So my first question is, is bandwidth really an issue to prevent online? Whenever I have monitored it, it's been small/low? What are the issues you encounter if you do? Multiple players in the same instance for example? A poor latency causing lag or similar?
I think I have finally nailed down my problems (besides being old and clumsy:p) in open:

LATENCY! I just read about checking that and have verified that mine is HORRIBLE. IE: numbers vary from 269ms all the way up to 623ms. UGH!

Anyway, sorry to go off topic,,,,,

- my concern is that some people with a *grind* mentality will treat Powerplay as a competition to win, so in doing so will actually be enticed to play SOLO (or in GROUP) simply because they can compete more efficiently there.

I'm afraid for this we will have to hope that the large numbers (multiple players in multiple modes playing for all different factions) will even this out.
This is close to what is being asked in Vox Populi and I answered there: You will also not be able to prevent people who don't have to work a 40+ hour job a week to play all day for a certain goal. You can't limit the hours someone is allowed to play for a certain goal. Or people who have been around since Gamma and have a far larger ship and resources compared to someone who joined just a week ago.

I think my initial statement probably did infer Solo players shouldn't benefit from it, and if it did, that was my mistake. Apologies.

What I'd like to see are more and more reasons for players to play ONLINE togethor, but my concern is many some (many) people will treat Powerplay as a "competition" and in doing so will actually be put off playing ONLINE simply to be more effect and meet less "opposition"... it would be nice if somehow Powerplay helped entice people ONLINE though by some method (where they can play ONLINE of course).

Ok, well I'm sorry too that I was snarky. I just seem to read similar sentiments everytime I log onto the forum these days. And I fear that eventually Frontier will start listening.

Ok, if we're being civil. . . the honest truth is that I am not sure to what extent Open play would affect my 'bandwidth'. I live in a rural area in Australia - and rely on 3G broadband, which is not very reliable - I also have a small download limit each month. I have asked repeatedly on these forums (and also via customer support - several times . . .) and, although no one has been able to give me precise information, I have been advised to stick to Solo, and most of the time that is fine - although I get booted out now and then. I only once played in Open and found it very laggy.

(I bought into the Beta when it was still being advertised as Offline - just preempting any snarky comments about buying an MMO with dodgy internet - ED is the only online game I play - usually I buy discs or ownload games onto my laptop at work and transfer them to my Steam library and play them offline at home).

With respect to Powerplay - I understood you to be saying that you hoped Solo players wouldn't benefit from it. I don't personally have an issue with Open players having higher rewards for PVP combat or some such thing - but I'd hate to think I was missing out on cool gameplay just because a vocal and persistent group of players felt that I shouldn't have it. That's a bit harsh, don't you think?

this is more of a global reflexion, but i think it is not normal that one is able to affect the many AND stay "out of reach" in the same time.

while i understand that some ppl might not be able to open for technical reasons, this shall not come in play here, many open player feel that allowing solo to benefit and influence open is cheating, and imao rightfully so since you can, for instance, trade or whatever in virtually godmode (let's face it, it's not like NPC are a real threat).

Apologies if I touched a nerve :)

I have no desire to suggest Solo players should get a lesser experience. But it would be nice if somehow gameplay/mechanics could promote/entice ONLINE play. And my concern is some mechanics may reward SOLO/GROUP play, so may actually be counter productive in this respect.

That's a nice way of putting it... "affect the many AND stay 'out of reach' at the same time."

Goodness knows what the answer is though. I just feel if ONLINE play can be made more appealling/rewarding it can only help.

But I fear many people competing at Powerplay will now see (yet) another reason to play offline instead of ONLINE :(

It seems like it will encourage interaction between players...and that's something this game needs. Do we have an ETA?

This is my favorite part from the newsletter:
A number of improvements to the background simulation. You might not notice them, but they're all making the galaxy more credible and richer in every way.
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a sound? :D

It's going to be interesting to see, perhaps we'll go back to a place we once visited and be like: "Hang on...who stole the moon!"

Let's hope so!

But consider this, if your goal is to attack traders, would you rather attack NPC traders or CMDRs? If you goal is to trade as much as possible, would you rather risk being interdicted by NPCs, or CMDRs? My concern is it might actually make some player actively not play online to be more "competitive" within Power Play.

It's officially been announced and I can say I'm a happy chap.

Looking forward to the release :)

And I was almost right in my speculation and so were others haha

Thoughts?

Yeah I'm pretty psyched too. Just came back to E: D following a few very busy months where I had no time for this game, just got a Rift DK2 and set it up decently, and now have this to look forward to. Not a bad week!

If some of the goals are specific to killing other players that would pretty much mandate open (you could do it in a private group but it seems unlikely) so let's hope for some of them.
