Hardware & Technical power saving issue

having a right nightmare with this... game has been working fine albeit I've had to use precision x to dial back a bit to stop the screen going black. I also had issues with my Dell 1440p monitor going into powersaving but also fixed that... or so I thought. After working fine for several weeks I'm getting the same issue with the game causing the monitor to go into power saving. Started when I looked at the galaxy map after just a few seconds in the game. I had a right faff trying to download the latest driver for my Zotac GTX970 but now it seems to be OK... when I go into device manager it lists the latest driver. Problem now though is that it crashed out on the load up screen and I get the error in the pic attached. I have a suspicion that the fan or the PSU may be dodgy as a couple of days ago I did smell a definite burning aroma for a couple fo minutes but couldn't pinpoint it. Does this sound like a possibility? The computer seems to run other programmes fine... web, excel, photoshop...

That error is usually the result of an unstable GPU. Many pre-OCed parts have shoddy clock/power profiles that result in insufficient voltage being supplied at less than full load. This is often most noticeable if you use vsync as anything that caps frame rate is also likely to cause the card to work at a lower power state.

I would definitely try to isolate the source of that smell and make sure all fans that are supposed to be spinning are.

None of which typically demand much from the GPU.

Tried running any other games, 3D benchmarks, or the like?
