So, I've got a fully outfitted BH rig, can take pretty much anything and I've decided to finally take on PP and join a power, get some gear and generally try my hand in it, but I have some doubts and hope someone can help me with it.
Who should I join? From an RP perspective, I'm an independent. I dislike the controlling nature of the Federation and the Empire and the Alliance seems to me to be doomed to fail - but I have friendly relations to all of them. I have nothing against pirates, smugglers or slavers, but they have against me, since I usually get my payday on their misery. I'm a fighter and very occasionally an explorer. From the 3 independent powers, only the Crew is combat focused and those guys already hate the guts of people like me. I've thought about joining Hudson or Patreus only for a better payday, but those guys freak me out. I have friends in both of them. From a practical perspective, I'm inclined to join Duval for the better shields and any faction that increases bounty values afterwards. Patreus seems to be particularly attractive, since he's not getting horribly undermined like Hudson.
What does it entail, exactly? It appear that gameplay after joining a power is basically like this: I farm merits until I'm satistfied with my standing in the week, then go around doing what I usually do, BH in this case. If I join Patreus or Hudson, for example, I go to a where they're expanding and kill a bunch of NPCs/players or go to a system were a rival power is expanding and kill a bunch of NPCs/players, deliver those merits in a controlled system and repeat until I have as much merits as I want. Is this correct?
Is it worth it, monetarily? I mean, it obviously seems so, since a 20%~50% increase in bounty payout is astronomical, depending on where you hunt. I have no idea how much the power specific items cost, are they too expensive or have regular, accessible prices? Also, the merit hunting don't seem to give much on terms of credits and for the weekly power salary seem to be only meaningful if you really dedicate yourself (rating 4 or more). I mean, is it too hard to increase in the ranks or that's too costly, time-wise and money-wise?
Anyway, thanks in advance for any help given.
