PowerPlay, casual players thoughts.

Well, I'm a very casual player, I really like the idea of PowerPlay. So packed up mining and trading to go support a faction I like. However I found some issues for a casual low income player, I can now make a mil an hour trading/mining. But I wanted something more interesting to take part in.

I don't have the 100+ million (easy guaranteed money back investment) to put into this initially to run the transport missions effectively. The 30 minute cap is a deal breaker, I feel it should be more like 15 minutes. (Am I getting this wrong? So far I can just see a way to break the system by speeding up the cargo).

After doing the math the non combat route for this is ridiculous. Hauling Propaganda will take me 45+ hours to get to rank 4. That's 7 hours a day. Depending on the cycle length.I'm a student and am not working at the minute, but there is no way I can spend that amount of time playing Elite to achieve this.

Is there a better non combat route? Or am I going to be forced shooting ships to get by? I can't see how PowerPlay brings casual players into this part of the game.

And yes, money is a bonus, it keeps me flying and wanting to participate, so far I'm making a loss. I see how being a well off player this is just an easy thing to do to support their faction, drop a few 100 mil, job done. But a lot of people can't do that. Also why should their be a massive gap in income, perhaps the system needs more ranks, why is there such a jump from 4 to 5.

Just my thoughts

Nope, not really. Two points of interest to know about Power Play:

1. It's heavily combat focused, and isn't really made for anyone who wants to play non-combat. You can, but it will be frustrating.

2. It's tailored for the rich players. Taking part in PP does not make you credits, in fact it loses you credits.

If you don't mind those two things then PP can be fun and engaging. If either of them bother you, then it's probably better to remain neutral and not take part.

Yeah, I'll be switching to my Vulture and trying out the combat route.

Otherwise its back to bounty hunting and trading.

Big shame that PowerPlay doesn't involve the whole community. I think they dropped the ball to be honest.

something traders can do is find a good trade route which goes from their place they are trying to get pick up merit cargo, then run it back and forth picking up merit cargo each time it becomes available. This way you are earning credits whilst you wait. Even better if you can find a system you are looking to expand to and a controlled system to trade between.

At least on that side, the power's territory control effects do apply to all players, even if you don't pledge.

So you can get 15% off outfitting at Li's control systems, or make use of the other trade/bounty/black market bonuses that each power has. Those that effect security will mean more/less pirates in certain areas, and their effects on influence may more wars happen more often in their borders.

In that sense, PP does add a bit more economic diversity to the map that all players can exploit.

No, I don't play PP. I hate territorial stat-based games with a passion and also, with PP being part of ED, IMO it's immersion breaking and doesn't feel right.

Yeah I agree its got a lot of potential and bonuses, I love the idea of it all, I really want to help a faction and enjoy the satisfaction of them gaining territory that I helped gain. There just isn't a lot of different ways to contribute to the system that doesn't loose you money or isn't more of a grind/inconvenience than some of the existing mechanics.

Decided to go back to trading until I can afford to contribute to PowerPlay or afford not to worry where the money is coming from to repair/insure my ship.

I will try trading in routes that can help my faction for now.
