Powerplay Powerplay credits gone!

I'd earned a stack of powerplay credits(over 2000) - but hadn't taken them to a controlled system to cash them in. Came to the game today - and they have gone - do you have to cash in any credits you have before Thursday morning?
I was a long way from "home" - and it seems daft to have to go home on Wednesday night just to claim your credits.

Yes - any powerplay merits have to be handed in before the cycle changes.

Lots of cycles I have parked my ship at HQ or in a Control System early on Thursday morning, filling up every 30 mins with the materials for Preparation or Fortifying. Then I wake up on Thursday, log in and soon have a full load to deliver. So I'm not sure in what way they expire?
