Hi, I'd like to propose a new minor faction within the Federation: The Federal Democratic League (or FDL for short).
The FDL is essentially of group of patriots who are loyal to the principals the Federation was founded on, but have no love for the government or the military. They feel that the government no longer stands for the rights of its citizens, and only looks out for the corporations that keep it in power. The FDL is a grassroots movement that wishes to restore the Federation to its former glory.
Key characteristics:
Patriotic: The FDL may hate the government, but they love the Federation. FDL members believe that the Federation needs to return to its founding principals if it is to survive.
Demographic: The FDL is mostly made up of traders and miners, and backed by small business owners. Many FDL members are veterans of the Federal Navy, and lifelong Federation citizens.
Anti-corporate: The FDL hate corporations. As far as they're concerned, the government is allowing the corporations to create monopolies that are pushing out the little guy. FDL members will avoid flying missions for corporations, and support independent 'Mom n' Pops' type businesses instead.
Anti-Imperial: As much as the FDL may distrust their own government, they will always despise the Empire more. The Empire is the antithesis of everything the FDL believes in, and many in the FDL are paranoid that the Empire is trying to undermine the Federation and erode its core values. FDL members will always put aside their differences with those in power to help deal with any perceived threat the Empire may pose.
Xenophobic: Besides the Empire, the FDL have no real love for anyone they perceive to be 'outsiders', and tend to be paranoid and isolationist. They consider the Alliance and any other independents to be weak-willed separatists and traitors.
Preppers: The FDL is convinced that the Thargoid will return one day to finish what they started, and that the Federation needs to be ready.
Anti-slavery: Slavery goes against everything the FDL stands for, and the want to see it stamped out completely. FDL members do not trade in slaves, and will not do business with anyone who does.
Free-marketeers: The FDL strongly believes in the free market and considering the idea of corporate monopolies to to be 'un-Federation'. They believe any citizen should be able to build their own business from the ground up with enough hard work. FDL members support local democratic parties and confederacies, but never corporations.
My idea for this faction came from watching shows like Sons of Anarchy. I'm fascinated by the idea that a lot of people have a kind of love-hate relationship with their own country. When I visited America, I met quite a lot of people who people who were deeply patriotic, but hated the government. The would fly the flag, and speak proudly of their constitution and their history, but constantly make derogatory statements about the 'idiots' running the country. I think that if the Federation were a real country, it would be a distopic version of America, and there would be patriotic movements like the FDL trying to bring it back to its founding principals. Thanks for reading.
