Powerplay Powerplay is Arbitrary - Why Should I Care?

I logged off 2 hours before reset. Aisling had all but 3 systems fortified with a different 3 undermined and not much else happening.

I log on today and we are in turmoil with 13 systems undermined in those last 2 hours.

This would have taken a coordinated effort of 100ish players to accomplish or a group held onto their turn-in until the last minute.

Unless someone comes forward and admits to coordinating this I am calling .

Why should I give a crap about PP if the "sim" arbitrarily chooses what happens.

From all that I've seen, PP is really unbalanced.

And yeah, just... don't care about it. I left the bubble before the PP release and haven't been back since. 0 cares.

Two days ago I unpledged from Arissa, because I never did any powerplay and was tired of getting attacked for no reason in half the inhabited space, in which I was "hostile".

I think it just doesn't make sense to have two political layers in one system, the faction and the powers. A system can be Federal but under the influence of an Empire power, what does that even mean. I was rather enthusiastic at first, but now I think the whole PP thing was just a really bad idea, one no one wanted on top of that. The whole system is ultra complicated, but just not interesting since as a single player whatever you do you won't have any influence , and the whole thing doesn't seem to work anyway. I hope FD just leave PP as it is now for those who enjoy it, and focus their efforts on things that matter.

Just got Deadly, got elite trader with normal trading, LR smuggling, and mining (was at Tycoon before Sothis debacle), and am 68% of the way to Elite on exploration.

TL:DR - I've blazed every trail in the game except pirating which just didn't appeal to me and thought I'd try PP.

Hard to see why anyone would care.

The Power leader NPCs are cartoon clowns with no mechanism to influence events in their own empires, which totter between catastrophies driven by ridiculous player driven democracy, where those players are either mischievous or just plain inept in intent.
The very concept of local warlords who are not directly controlled by the military might of the 3 major factions has no founding in Elite lore. It is a gimmick invented for the purpose of PP itself.
And the weekly game turn, which destroys any feeling of a real time continuous simulation, is not only irritating, but also open to exploitation.

But if some players enjoy it, then good luck to them.

The PP maps are notorious for slow/never updating. The only way to truly know what's happening is to get live updates from Commanders on the scene. A well organized faction with effective leadership can work with that intel. That's how it works in my faction, we spot and respond to threats and monitor current targets using that info. Check out your Powers reddit, that's where the MMO gets done.

Powers also merit bomb one another. Commanders save their undermining merits and turn them in as the cycle finishes, this makes an effective response next to impossible for the defender. What you call is probably a smart and organized stealth offensive by your enemies. PP strategy and tactics 101.

It was a gift from Taco Corp and Winters pilots.

You're welcome.

Should have went with the devs and immediately abandoned PP after it's release.

Well PP and CQC both suck and surprisingly enough never showed in any of the previous incarnations of Elite!

Like you I don't partake in PP, but if you think of this game as 14th-18th century naval ships and colonial powers in space, then a great deal begins to make more sense. Not necessarily agreement in your eyes - not saying that - but just make logical sense.

Take your system is Federal but under influence of Empire. The analogy would be a Spanish colony in the New World that is a spanish colony. It is spanish aka Federal. But along comes a fleet of English frigates and they proclaim all of the coast along which that colony and several others are in as British controlled. These are still spanish colonists in spanish colonies. Nothing some English Admiral just said changes that.

But just as it was back in the 14th-18th century, whoever projects their naval power in the areas is the de facto controllers / influence owners. Those British ships sail into that colony and demand sugar, water, and rum supplies - now that spanish colony is under their influence aka threat of death, and has to comply.

that to me is what a system tagged as Federal/Empire but under the influence of other side means.

I do agree though, but admittedly biased, that PP doesn't seem to hold much attraction for me and wish FD had spent their focus on other areas, namely improving core parts of game still waiting to be fixed or actual new content that enhances core game mechanics. But to be fair, PP is now just as much a part of the 'core' game now that is has been launched, so deserves being cleaned up and tuned as well.
