Powerplay, I've changed my mind

So, I was really worried about being able to rank up being a fairly casual player. I'm generally only able to play Tuesdays and Thursdays with some time on the weekends, so I was really concerned about the amount of time to rank up and the rollover of my merits to keep rank; I had no reason to be concerned. In a nights worth of combat, I was able to get over 700 merit vouchers with combat and would help with the other activities when I flew back to turn in vouchers. I was able to reach rank 2 with only a few days of playtime on this cycle.
.
I'd encourage my fellow casual players to give PP a shot before continuing the posts about time and rollover. It's really not that bad to get going.
.
I want to caveat: this post is from the view of a mainly combat pilot, not a trader's point of view; so I can't really speak to that. :)

This is really good to hear. I myself have more time to play than most, but I was worried that a lot of commanders I know might not have the time to appreciate PP.

Do you get money for kills too or is it just merits?

Bring a KWS, you'll get 1000 per merit you get, plus you have a chance of getting empire bounty on them, especially the agents.

That's good to know will try scanning stuff going forwards as if it's a t6 or lower I have to wait for fsd cool down in my courier anyway

Maybe it is no problem at all but for my appr. 600 Merits I now have a bounty of more than 300.000 Cr. on my head. It makes me feel quite unsafe in Open cause everyone with a KWS can see this bounty. My guess is, that they intended this to encourage more PVP but it makes me thinking about hiding in Solo-Mode.

I'm at Rating 3 now. Kinda wish they give them proper names these new powerplay ranks instead of just calling them Rating 1/2/3/4/5.

But yeah, actually enjoying it. I've gone from being a very passive explorer pilot early on, to now being a full on Imperial killer racking up merits for the Alliance.

You can't be KWS'd in SC, so someone would have to interdict and scan you. If you're going to head to a PVE place such as a RES or nav beacon, you'd probably get a request to wing up instead of a KWS and kill. I've got a bounty close to 5 mil, and I've never been KWS'd at a PVE location.

Gathering Merits is poorly balanced. There are more time and moneyconsuming actions to get merits compared to the simple shooting. FD should absolutely balance thse harder tasks in the way to provide more merits per turned in unit.

Its much easier to just kill some ships in combat zones compared to find special ships in sc interdict them, shoot shields down, hatch break, and gather containers from space.
More time and money consuming task should generate way more merits than this simple shooting. otherwise people will only look for easy merit gathering tasks and abondon those harder ones, that cant be the intenion of powerplay

I went the other way, sadly, I pledged to ALD and gave it a go for a few days but didn't really take to it so went back to doing CGs. I logged in today whilst docked at Gandii for the CG and noticed overnight I had become hostile with that system because Archon Delaine's move on the system. So as I am not really participating in PP, and it is now affecting my CGs, I've unpledged from PP and will remain like that until I see more reason to join. I am sure PP will get better but for me there is not enough reason to do it, or enough money to be made to even pay the repair bills. Back to trading, CGs and bounty hunting for me.

How were you able to amass 700 merit points in just an hour? Even at 15 merits a ship, this would be still around 47 ships. In an hour??? Could you give a short runthrough of what you did? I am also mostly a combat pilot and found earning merits was going very slow so far.

Find a combat zone with the powers fighting. That's the easiest way to amass merits quickly; I found one that had sidewinders up to a few asps. Only KWS the higher end ships for cash.

that seems even more ridiculous, i was getting 1 merit per kill in the combat expansion zones.

are there other zones where they're fighting beyond the expansion specific hotpoints?

I'm doing both, Powerlay and CG in a rival independent system. Constantly hostile or wanted whilst doing the CG but that hasn't presented any problems so far.

I was doing a combination of everything. My previous post is wrong, it was a day's worth of work, so maybe 3ish hours to do everything. My apologies.

That sounds much easier than gathering stolen cargo.
I did 2 runs and gave up doing that as the reward is just pathetic, especially financially.
I made around 300cr per ship. Usual run to fill my 32 cargo about 4 ships.
Roughly 1,200cr for about 40 mins work - fantastic!
And just 32 merits.

The riskier ways of obtaining merits need to reward more merits.

I'm sure it will all get balanced soon :)

I must admit I'm a bit confused with PowerPlay. I've watched the tutorials (twice) and get the concepts just fine, but in practice it's still overwhelming.

Also it doesn't help that I'm aligned with Edmund Mahon. It seems the ONLY way to get merits is to shuttle papers around. Isn't there anything combat related that can be done? Obviously he doesn't prepare, expand, or control with force, but surely there must be areas others are encroaching on that require defense? How would that work?

Combat for power play is basically, go to another faction's powers (so, for instance empire vs empire powers don't provide vouchers) and pew pew the hostile ships.

Really? No restrictions in that regard? Just pew-pew hostile ships in another major faction?

Interesting that it makes no distinction between, say, piracy, bounty hunting, or just straight up murder in that regard. You'd think some Powers would frown on murder done in their name ;)
