Powerplay, I've changed my mind

So, I was really worried about being able to rank up being a fairly casual player. I'm generally only able to play Tuesdays and Thursdays with some time on the weekends, so I was really concerned about the amount of time to rank up and the rollover of my merits to keep rank; I had no reason to be concerned. In a nights worth of combat, I was able to get over 700 merit vouchers with combat and would help with the other activities when I flew back to turn in vouchers. I was able to reach rank 2 with only a few days of playtime on this cycle.
.
I'd encourage my fellow casual players to give PP a shot before continuing the posts about time and rollover. It's really not that bad to get going.
.
I want to caveat: this post is from the view of a mainly combat pilot, not a trader's point of view; so I can't really speak to that. :)

I hope there will be more like you. /and they will join Alliance power/ LOL

Really? No restrictions in that regard? Just pew-pew hostile ships in another major faction?

Interesting that it makes no distinction between, say, piracy, bounty hunting, or just straight up murder in that regard. You'd think some Powers would frown on murder done in their name ;)
You need to go to a location controlled by another power and kill their powers ships. If you bring up the powers map, select another power, find a controlled location and click the new pp icon (bar graph) it will give you specific information. What you need to kill depends on the opponent. I am Hudson, I went to Archon and had to kill transport ships (got 750k bounty for slapping Type-6 and Haulers), then went to Torvel and had to hit any imperial ship. You will find that some - winters for example you have to steal cargo, I presume because these are also feds.

What I also do it during my normal flying around from location to location I stop at expansion zones and pick up intel on the way to hand in credits.

As for bounties, I only play in open and have racked up over 1mil in hostile locations, not really had an issue with it so far. Kind of hoping I do soon though ;)

Also when I am doing PP stuff I dont even think about credits, plenty of other stuff I can do to get those (the 40% bounty bonus makes it worthwhile).

Would anyone mind explaining to a confused individual such as myself how to do this? I'm a combat pilot forced to trade propaganda and it's so boring I could scream.

Head to another faction's power space. Start killing their ships. It has to be another faction though, no empire vs empire or fed vs fed.

I looked at powerplay yesterday after reading Aisling Angels' pretty great guide, but came to the realization that as a trader I can't afford to actually commit to any given power. My current routes all straddle the Patreus-Torval border, so if I sign up for either of those not only will I need to worry about the occasional pirate, but everyone on the "wrong" side of the border will be able to assault my freighter without consequence (and if I sign up for someone else then it will be open season and *any* ship I encounter will be able to attack with impunity!). It will be the equivalent of trading in an anarchy system. And if I decide to go back to trading after backing a power, I need to get out of Dodge because my old faction will actively hunt me down. The only way to be a trader and take part in powerplay is to limit oneself to the occupied space of a single power, and as a trader that's a pretty hefty limitation.

Wait a sec. OP - You actually tried out a game feature before forming an opinion on it?

Wow, you really are in the minority. Repped.

How to get combat merits

As I understand it, it's a bit more specific than that. What I do to gain merits for combat is:

A) Browse rival faction's powerplay screen looking for A) control systems to undermine or B) expansion systems to oppose. When you click on a system, a message box with the phrase "undermine/opposition task" will tell you exactly what you need to do to undermine/oppose the power trying to fortify/expand that system. Then you go to the system do the task and as you do it you get vouchers. Bring the vouchers back to one of your control systems without dying and you get the merits. These tasks seem to come in one of three flavors:

  1. Hunt and kill a certain type of ship (e.g. "federal logistics") found in supercruise. These seem to give 15 merits per kill.
  2. Pirate cargo from a specific type of ship (also found in supercruise) and return the cargo to your control system. (Not sure how many merits/tonne, I haven't done this type since beta and it was bugged when I tried it.)
  3. Enter a special type of zones (which work just like combat zones but have different names, such as "security sweeps") and kill enemy ships inside. These give 1 merit per kill.

Funny. I play the game in german language. The detailed discription you refer to is simply blacked out. No text, just a headline, no instructions. Funny as hell.

I've changed my mind in the other direction. I was loving the power stuff until I discovered that players are joining powers to mess them up from the inside. Instantly ruins the whole concept for me.

One of the powers right now is essentially a blob, having the greatest player numbers.

These are the two flaws I've seen with it after 3 nights of play.

FD I have a translator's degree in German if you would like to hire me as a contractor I can do it over the next 3 days, give me a shout via PM with an offer.
